Oh no, the poor NIMBYs will lose out on some shops that, dare I say, are a smidge too close to the subway and highway to be saved!

While I understand the retail offerings elsewhere along this stretch are quite...depressing, the market will adapt for the needs of the apartment neighbourhood thats established itself to the west. This site is simply way too valuable to remain lower density commercial.

The issue is the area, as it is, and as it's being built, does not allow for retail offerings to simply open elsewhere.
How large will the retail spaces in the base of these condo's be? Will they have dedicated loading docks? Will unit owners want late night restaurants operating under their windows? Judging by the rest of the retail opening in the condos to the East, it's a big fat no.

We need to start seeing a plan for retail in condo towers that allow people to not have to drive 20 mins to access things they need, while providing housing.

Councilor is spearheading a petition to "save our shops" despite railing against these shops existing when it was a TTC parking lot.
Yeah, I was sent a link to the petition by a neighbour, but haven't signed it. I'm ambivalent about this project. Neither for nor against.

I mean ...

1. It's brand named strip mall surrounded an imposing surface parking lot...

2. ...being replaced likely by brand named retail.

...I am not sure there's anything here to get really upset about, let alone "local".

It is a municipal election-year and even incumbent City Councillors need to "refresh" their contact lists of motivated local voters.

Creating / stoking a CRISIS, then a "give us all your current contact information" petition -- and appearing as the "Local Defender against Rapacious Outsiders" (tm) is a well practiced method of doing that.
