Yesterday I spotted a backhoe doing some excavation behind the building, and today some workers putting up some signage to this long neglected property.that was once the rather mysterious and sketchy Oak Leaf Steam Baths.
The company renovating the building is Xana Group (a design/build & renovation company). Based on their website their work is pretty generic and forgettable (budget chain hotels, home renovations, etc):
November 29 - A boutique hotel with thirty units, with a cafe / bar on the ground floor and a lounge in the basement. Building permits were issued in May and July 2021 and it is finally getting built. Renovating and repurposing of the existing structure as a hotel was confirmed by both the building permit and the crew on site.
The area behind the building is actually quite large, and is currently being cleared. From the building permit:

Description: Convert the existing two-storey commercial building fronting onto Bathurst Street into a hotel containing 30 suites, by constructing a south side one-storey addition, and a rear staircase addition, also includes Cafe/Bar on Ground floor and Lounge in basement. see TLAB dec
Not the most exciting thing to happen here, but still a positive that it'll bring this building back to life. Kind of hard to imagine how 30 hotel units fill here though, even with the new addition. Must be small units and most with no natural windows.
Nice to see another small, boutique hotel pop up near a popular retail strip (there's another one happening on McCaul). I'm surprised we don't have more of these sprinkled throughout downtown.
