I know a bar owner on the Danforth who grew up on Marjory Street. He said it was a pretty hardscrabble area back in the 60s and 70s. It's that tiny street living in the hulking shadow of Gerrard Square. What was there before Gerrard Square, I wonder? Will the esteeemed historians of UT step up and enlighten a guy?
Gerrard Square Mall opens in 1975. Before that it was industrial / manufacturing:

RIP Pho Com Tam 168, your grilled pork vermicelli is top notch.

Glad that this project contributes some decent residential density and will provide some commercial space at grade.

Interesting find PE.

The industrial was next to the railway and had a spur. It didn't quite reach Gerrard, which appears to have had a mix of houses and then some commercial closer to Pape.

I'm curious about what was there, but haven't found any good images just yet.

It's a community staple. Has everything you need for affordable necessities and lots of seniors gather there because it's a free place to hang out inside with seating. Would hate to see it go. Would like to see the surface lots and elevated parkade redeveloped though.

I agree. The layout inside is perfectly fine and they have all the essential major big box stores one needs.

The only problem with it is lack of adequate parking. Like has been the trend for years, parking needs to be added underground rather than on top of it. The above ground parking there suffices but is an eyesore, and the space could be used to expand the mall itself.

With the success of the mall and the subway station being delivered here, the owners surely aren’t concerned about the parking situation.

But I agree parking is a challenge for visitors. I must admit I usually park illegally outside the food court if I’m only picking up Tropical Joe’s.

An in-person community consultation meeting is planned for this project on March 19th, 2025:
