No matter your point of view, this does show the risks of naming streets (among other infrastructure) after living people.

Fixed that for ya.

All streets names should be numbered or named after things in nature (Oakwood drive for example). If they are to be named after neighborhoods, ensure then the neighborhoods should'nt named after people.

Edmonton sports writer Terry "Large" Jones tweeted yesterday that Wayne Gretzky needs to explain his relationship with Trump to the Canadian people. After all #99 has done for Edmonton and Canada this is how he is treated by Mr. Jones, who wrote several books about 99. TDS is off the rails - does Jones think all Canadians now should provide a friendship list to the government for vetting? If Wayne G was friends with Biden or Obama is that okay, but being friends with Trump is not? Jones completely embarrassed himself and got heavily ratio'd and took his post off of X. What is wrong with people? Why do people on this forum think we should re-name Gretzky Drive because of who he chooses to be friends with? Complete TDS insanity.
Maybe I’m missing something. Could you refresh my memory when Biden or Obama threatened to annex Canada?

Cancel culture out in full force - let's cancel Tesla, cancel Wayne Gretzky, cancel American culture, cancel cancel cancel. Its unbelievable how badly Wayne Gretzky is being treated for simply being friends with someone. Unbelievable. He has done so much for this city, for hockey and for Canada. By all accounts is a generous and caring person. Does he need to submit a list of who he chooses to be friends with and have it vetted by people like you MacLac? You just said #99 "can piss off back to where he came from." Unbelievable. Several years ago I read a biography about the musical genius, but troubled, jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. Joni Mitchell was very good friends with him, which surprised me because Davis was a misogynist wife beating heroin addict for much of his life. Does this mean we should all cancel Joni Mitchell? And, should I even be allowed to read books about jazz musicians since jazz is an American art form? Not surprising coming from you though MacLac - you seem like the cancel culture type - especially if it goes against something you believe in. But of course I'm sure you are a highly "educated" progressive urbanite - not a hillbilly ignorant rural person - you know the type of people that gets laughed at on this forum by people like you.
You throw around names of Canadian celebrities without a thought on their position on the orange man. One quote I quickly found demonstrates her position.

I don't like Trump. Should Gretzky liking him have anything to do with his accomplishments or his name in this city, no.
Is Gretz a traitor, ummm I really don't think so.

Cancel culture, move on to something else now please.
It is not up to you or IanO to lecture people about moving on. They will in their own time. If you don’t like it ignore it.

^ Still, I believe it was very tone deaf on the part whoever chose the honorary captain to select him.

I mention Carey Price and Hayley Wickenheiser, but you could have also had Patrice Bergeron, Marie Philipe-Poulin, or really anyone else. These are true Canadian legends who represent the game exceedingly well and embody what it means to be Canadian.

That was a very politically charged game, no matter what anyone says, and to specifically select someone who is a known supporter of the very guy threatening annexation of Canada, is a major miscalculation on the part of the NHL, or Hockey Canada, or whoever made that decision.

He's the greatest player to ever play the game, and I recognize that he has had a positive impact in Canada over the years. But he's never exactly been the most civic minded person, and is now once again, actively supporting someone who's threatening to annex the country he's supposed to be representing at the event.

Trump is being obnoxious - which is what he has always done. Do you really think the USA is going to invade Canada? I mean the CCP from China actually interfered in our two last federal elections, established CCP police stations in Canada to intimidate Chinese citizens and 11 still unnamed MPs were in coercion with the CCP. By putting out some stupid tweets Trump is living rent free in millions of hysterical Canadians mindless heads - he must be laughing at how easy it was. Canada needs to ignore him and take care of their own backyard - get tougher on crime and drugs, increase resource development, improve GDP growth etc etc. But instead all this nonsense and TDS hysteria - and attacking Canadian icons for who they choose to be friends with.

And if you don't like what we say about the stupidity of attacking #99 then ignore it.

Joni Mitchell has her opinions and I respect them. If I disagree with her opinions I'm not going to call for the cancelation of her music or art - or suggest anything in Canada named in her honour should be renamed or torn down. This whole cancel culture thing is very "cultural revolutionish" - its absolute craziness.

Justin Trudeau sill has not named the 11 MPs who coerced with the CCP - that is much much much more traitorous then anything Gretzky has done. All Gretzky did was be friends with someone - he also helped Canada and Edmonton win countless championships.

Questioning the decision to make someone the honorary captain of Team Canada at a hockey game = Attack

That's some real snowflake behavior.

All Gretzky did was be friends with someone

*Be friends with someone who is actively hostile to the sovereignty of the country he's supposed to be representing. How is this so hard for you to understand? He's the wrong person to choose to represent our country at this time.

Nobody is calling for Wayne Gretzky to be "cancelled" as if that's some sort of actual thing that happens.

Yes - he is friends with Trump. Trudeau Sr. was friends with a communist dictator in Cuba and I don't remember this kind of backlash. Trump is obnoxious and is a USA protectionist president - the Liberals should have expected this but as usual they were unprepared and use emotion and a new found "patriotism" instead of addressing Canada's many issues. Wayne Gretzky doesn't need to apologize to anyone for whom he decides to be friends with. Are all your friends perfect people? Are they all perfectly adjusted progressive and virtuous people who do no wrong? Do you need to justify to other people who you hang out with and who you are friends with? This whole issue with #99 is off the hook crazy and embarassing for Canada. People need to calm the f*ck down. And people are calling for Gretzky to be cancelled - this thread was created to promote "cancelling" Wayne Gretzky Drive - next will be to take down his statue. People want to cancel Elon Musk and demanding his citizenship be revoked - cancel, cancel, cancel. I read on the forum we should stop consuming American culture. Its ridiculous and getting childish and boorish. If I was Gretzky I would not be happy about how this has played out - he has done nothing wrong. Many Canadians are acting like whining imbeciles who are so easily triggered by one obnoxious president who has a history of being loud and obnoxious. So many Canadians, and even Edmontonians are attacking the Great Gretzky because "guilty by association" - its ridiculous. Wayne Gretzky help put Edmonton on the map - he did so much for our national sport and for charities and good deeds in Edmonton and Canada - and people like you attack his character, call him a traitor and act like spoiled children having a tantrum because he is friends with an unpopular American politician. Its ridiculous - grow up.

You win the prize for most buzz words thrown around without thought in a single comment. Congrats. Also, you've been told this many times and yet never adjust, the enter button exists.

We hit the holy trifecta: cancel, triggered, communist.

The issue is with the NHL, Hockey Canada or whoever chose him to be the representative at the 4 Nations. I could care less who he hangs out with, I vehemently disagree with the politics that man represents, but that doesn't matter. What matters in this conversation is sovereignty, regardless of politics.

Trump has openly threatened Canadian sovereignty and called us a fake country. No one is saying that Canada is perfect, but a lot of people like and even love this country, despite its flaws, and would rather not see it annexed by a hostile foreign power. Clearly, you're not one of those people. Is it just rhetoric from Trump? Maybe, but he's actually acting on it by putting tariffs in place and continually pressing and goading. America is now a hostile nation, and Canadians understandably, want to distance themselves from it. Especially when Trump's concerns with Canada are not based in reality. The US trade deficit is just because the US is a bigger economy that needs Canadian resources and imports and more fentanyl comes into Canada from the US than the other way around.

What's your obsession with bringing The Trudeau's into every conversation. Every single thing its Trudeau, Trudeau, Trudeau, Trudeau, you've got some sort of major hate fetish on the whole family line. Also, have you ever stopped to consider that, maybe other people don't really like Trudeau much either? I would not consider myself to be a Trudeau supporter, I will never forgive him for not following through on proportional representation.

What are you even talking about? This is not even remotely related to the issue at hand.

No, he doesn't need to apologize, but he shouldn't be put on a pedestal at a time like this. It's tone deaf on the part of whoever decided he should be the one instead of someone like Carey Price, Hayley Wickenheiser or Patrice Bergeron.

I am not saying "cancel Wayne Gretzky" I am saying, whoever decided to make him honorary captain for Team Canada at the 4 Nations Final is very stupid. Those are two incredibly different things. Wayne Gretzky should only be cancelled if he, I don't know, does a Sieg Heil publicly on camera for everyone to see. Seriously people, this ideology needed to be left in the 1940s.
