It's hard to believe it is so low. Combined PST and GST is 13%. I remember when the gasoline prices were mostly taxes. At $1 a litre, the effective tax rate is 29.5%. Just a few years ago when gas was occasionally down to 55¢/L it was 51.5%. If prices go to $1.50 a litre the effective tax rate is only 21.2%. Compare to the UK where currently the effective tax rate is over 200%!PetroCan's advertising claims 35% total tax, but I believe this refers to is the national average.
So Ontario is not the worst province when it comes to taxing gasoline.
