PetroCan's advertising claims 35% total tax, but I believe this refers to is the national average.

So Ontario is not the worst province when it comes to taxing gasoline.
It's hard to believe it is so low. Combined PST and GST is 13%. I remember when the gasoline prices were mostly taxes. At $1 a litre, the effective tax rate is 29.5%. Just a few years ago when gas was occasionally down to 55¢/L it was 51.5%. If prices go to $1.50 a litre the effective tax rate is only 21.2%. Compare to the UK where currently the effective tax rate is over 200%!
