Imagine if The Gondola existed already. This area of the city would have reliable transit to DT and Strathcona.
It’s been COE for a couple of years now.Do you have more info/insight on this? Was it really done for a food & bev operator? Per Streetview, in July 2024 the 'patio' area railings weren't installed yet--for a gov't project, not unsurprising to not have much movement while awaiting funding/approvals/direction/leadership changes, etc. Particularly for anything that is related to this sensitive area (river valley, Indigenous grounds).
Assuming this is an EPCOR asset still, not CoE?
Yes, partly explains the inertia. Not taking a risk is the most City of Edmonton thing. It’s been COE for a couple of years now.
Interesting. Maybe what we need is some impetus from the Federal Government. Now that the Urban National Park seems to be DOA because of the Province maybe there is some money that could be allocated to this instead.1) I'd point out that both The Forks and Granville Island had major investments from the federal government. There are Government of Canada logos all over both sites - and I wonder if designating part of the area as a National Historic Site (by virtue of the Indigenous heritage and former fort site) would go a long way toward its developement.
2) The Forks serves as an excellent model since it has a lively blend of both commercial and cultural uses (with the baseball stadium even in a similar location), and has been successful within a very similar context. The central market building at the Forks is an easy analog to how a portion of the Rossdale powerplant could function. It's worth noting that there is little on-site residential that is now only coming to fruition after decades of building a positive reputation.
I am pretty sure there is still a lot of work ongoing behind the scenes on a lot of Rossdale stuff, including the pump house.Yes, partly explains the inertia. Not taking a risk is the most City of Edmonton thing.
Hope so, considering the pump house is smaller, but perhaps where it is makes it more complicated.I am pretty sure there is still a lot of work ongoing behind the scenes on a lot of Rossdale stuff, including the pump house.
Exploring Options and Tradeoffs- August 2025
We have reviewed and considered what you shared with us about Rossdale during the Building a Project Vision Together and Exploring Opportunities stages. The project team is now preparing to share design options based on your feedback, including:

We want to hear from you
During this stage, we commit to using the priorities we heard during the engagement to inform the draft design for the project.
