Doug Ford approval falls to ‘worst’ level since taking office, poll finds

Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s approval rating has fallen to the lowest level since he took office in 2018, according to non-profit pollster Angus Reid, as the Progressive Conservative Party continues to face backlash over the controversial purchase of a private jet.

The latest results show that, between March and June, Ford experienced a ten-point drop, leaving him with just 21 per cent approval from voters in Ontario.

The Angus Reid Institute said the number represents “the worst assessment during his tenure as premier” and is largely due to both “economic pressure and self-inflicted wounds.”

“Most damaging may have been the brief purchase of a $28.9-million government jet, which Ford announced was being sold back to Bombardier after significant backlash,” the organization said.

Ford also finds himself at the bottom of the pack among fellow premiers, far behind Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew, who enjoys 62 per cent approval.
While Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also slid to a “personal worst” in approval rating amid the province’s separation referendum confusion, Angus Reid still clocked in her approval at 39 per cent.
Ford’s Progressive Conservatives have been experiencing a steady decline in public support in 2026 as the party entered its eighth year in office.

Public opinion polls, on average, show the PC with 40 per cent support — enough to win another majority government, but with tighter margins.

Polls have also shown the leaderless Liberals catching up to and, at times, beating the PC Party as voters started considering alternatives to the government party.

The slump in numbers was compounded by the government’s decision to exempt the premier and cabinet ministers from freedom of information laws, Ford’s legal battle to keep his personal cellphone records private and his decision to buy a $28.9 million Challenger 650 jet to accommodate Ford’s travel.
To compensate for the dip, Ford pivoted back to the Canada-U.S. relationship and pushed back on the Trump administration’s tariffs — a subject that earned Ford the ‘Captain Canada’ mantle in early 2025.

Ford flew to Washington, D.C., to meet with American lawmakers and pushed a new “Fortress North America” strategy.

On Wednesday, the premier welcomed Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro to Queen’s Park to sign a memorandum of understanding on cross-border cooperation.
The trips and meetings have been met with skepticism from members of the opposition who claim Ford is only putting on a show.

“Ontarians would like to see what does this actually mean for us?” asked NDP MPP Jessica Bell.

“Is it going to lead to more jobs coming to Ontario? Is it going to make grocery prices cheaper? Is it going to make housing more affordable? These are a lot of unanswered questions.”

Now that Ford is this deep in hole, he ought to cut these interminable “Protect Ontario” ads. They’re on every single world cup ad break so far and I don’t suspect they’ll stop. This will amount to more than the price of his jet for even less purpose.
They are absolutely shameless in using public funds to run thinly veiled political partisan ads. There was a time this was tightly controlled under McGuinty.

Following evaluations through an open, fair and competitive procurement process, Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming have awarded the contract to Canadian company Pomerleau Inc. to design and build the new parking structure. It will include:
  • An open-to-air, above-ground, five-storey parking structure for up to 3,500 vehicles
  • Approximately 680 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations
  • Up to 100 bicycle parking spaces
  • Bus pick-up and drop-off area
  • A landscape design that transitions the building seamlessly to the surrounding park.

3,500 parking spaces at 4 people each, means 14,000 people (as opposed the commuting average of 1.3 people. meaning 4,550 total people). The TTC averages 77,000 to 88,000 visitors per day. during the CNE. Expect more with the new GO Exhibition Station. Expect even more with the new Ontario Line 3's Exhibition Station. Why provide a garage that would only create a larger traffic congestion going to and from Ontario Place or the CNE or games at the Toronto Stadium BMO Field?

Guess we could convert some of the automobile parking spaces into secure bicycle parking spaces.

The story itself isn’t the most noteworthy, especially because of this part;
“Both the ROM and the provincial government said the two ideas, which Global News learned about through an ongoing freedom of information appeal, weren’t seriously considered.”

But more this:
“My first response is, what are you trying to hide?” Ontario NDP MPP Jessica Bell said.

Several reporters (Cross - The Trillum, McGrath - TVO, D’Mello - Global) on the Progress Canada podcast noted they were surprised the FOI story permeated into the general public.

I’ve noticed in the last month the opposition has been using this language and that only people who have something to hide act this way.

Got to wonder if their internal polling/data shows this is working. Sentiments like “Google has so much data already, I don’t have anything to hide” are common and I’m really curious if this is resonating with people, with the goal to chip away at public trust of Ford and his government, which may be effective with how secretive they’ve been acting.

Angus Reid is none too happy after the Premier called their poll ''fake'' the other day and has sent a legal letter to the Premier demanding that he clarify the public record.

"I got a hold of their methodology once, folks. They went into a hardcore NDP neighbourhood downtown, they didn't do it across. It's little games and then you guys run with it," Ford said.

“Angus Reid Institute stands by its work and its long record of independent, non-partisan public opinion research. We do not intend to litigate this issue in the media, but we do believe the public record should be corrected,” Shachi Kurl, President of the Angus Reid Institute, said in a statement.

But if the Premier thought the 21% approval rating was bad, one can imagine he won't be very happy with today's Liaison poll showing a 3 point lead for the Liberals and his disapproval rating up at a whopping 69%.... with just 29% thinking Ontario is on the right track vs 66% who say it's on the wrong track.
