Lets be clear on the above.....we're number one at stupidly adding people for whom we do not have sufficient housing or transit, nor adequate jobs.

Its not only nothing to brag about.............its shameful.

There is nothing wrong with immigration intrinsically. There is something wrong with explosive growth in the midst of a housing/homelessness crisis, and among the worst commute times and congestion in the developed world.

Statistics Canada does not consider Oshawa to be part of the GTA because it does not allow for merging CMAs with each other. However, it allows for expanding a CMA by merging with adjacent CAs (with a population less than 100,000), which is what happened with Ottawa and Windsor in 2021.

I agree that Oshawa should be considered part of the GTA, due to its proximity to Toronto and the frequency of GO Transit service to that area. In addition, the once-rural lands in western Whitby separating Oshawa's urban area from the rest of the GTA are filling in with new residential developments, enhancing the case that Statistics Canada should merge Oshawa into the GTA.

If Oshawa is its own metropolitan area, why is the GTHA not called the GTHOA?

It’s mainly because GTA was defined as the City of Toronto (Metro) and the four neighbouring regional municipalities, including Durham. Hence, no O.

So when it includes Hamilton, it’s GTHA.

When StatsCan defined metropolitan statistical areas in the early 1970s, Oshawa was a more independent city and economy as well.

Putting this here for now. Interested to actually see the report as the article doesn’t break down how many projects are actually underway. Also the population projections seem absurdly low. Finally I wonder if units under 5s are counted.

Thanks! I did read in the report that laneway/garden suites and multiplexes not counted here but in specific reports as is as-of-right. Another interesting takeaway is that development is increasing as a percentage along The Avenues.

Because when you do look at the record, the record is clear: where these kinds of projects have been allowed to go forward, and where traffic has been given enough time to adjust to the new street layouts, the result has been basically fine. The uproar and opposition inevitably fade away. People get used to the new bike lanes or the new transit lanes.
 
Another thing that was new for me in the report above is how Y/E is by far the fastest growing city centre and how it looks like it will merge with downtown if trends keep progressing.

Nobody wants to touch Rexdale, which is unfortunate because that entire part of the city should be terraformed.

I took a look on the Rexdale area on google maps Satellite mode and I noticed that around 50-60% of the land is industrial and the only GO Station in Rexdale is Etobicoke North which is surrounded by industrial buildings (unless things changes and there is a condo proposal near that station but time will tell).

It's also rather close to YYZ, and directly under the flight path, so don't hold your breath.

It could still be transformed by flooding it with midrises!

True, but you'd lose employment lands in an area that is frankly best suited for it (proximity to the airport, noisy under the flight path, accessible to multiple highways). There are more areas I'd like to transform with midrises than this.
