That doesn't stop the expropriation. It just means they have to wait for a more friendly federal government, and expropriating it now will save them time in the future.
Ford won't be in power for a more friendly federal government.

This is wishful thinking
Ford is approaching his expiry date with Ontarians. As long as LPO don't pick a dud leader, I think he's toast. It could be that he retires before he gets pushed out by his own party and Lecce or others try to secure another term.

The Spring Economic Update is out..............I'm underwhelmed.

The flagship item not already announced its a huge sum of money to incent young people to go into the trades and employers to participate in hiring/training.

That's fine, seriously, though I'm not sold that its the best use of dollars.

***

Other items of note.

- A new initiative shy on details on modernizing how airports are managed with an eye to cutting air travel costs.

- Beginning Jan 1st, 2027, the legislated deduction to fund CPP will drop from 9.9% to 9.5% as a result of the CPP's sustained surplus, the relief applies equally to employers and the employed and would result in annualized savings of $133 for ~70k per year worker.

- If you're paid every 2 weeks, thats $5.11 extra in your pay cheque.. (its a fine and reasonable move, but not exactly a game changer)

- Lots of ongoing vague promises of progress on internal trade barriers and the suggestion of aiming for deals with Mercosur (Brazil, Argentina et . al), India, and several south-east Asian nations including the Philippines.

****

Not present:

- Nothing about clawing back OAS from people who don't need it and boosting the incomes of low-income seniors and families who do.

- Nothing clear or bold on transit or health infrastructure

- The debt strategy, which reads as more as a hope and a prayer than a strategy is really missing both detail and substance, but also the ambition to return to balance.

Honestly? Between Dippers who claim he's Poilievre in a red suit and Tories who claim he's the love child of Trudeau and Jagmeet Singh and the WEF, this is probably the right middle of the road.

He's managing decline. There's no way around that. To balance the books, the government has to reform OAS and raise GST/HST. Any government that does that will lose. So why bother? Keep things even keel. Get a signature project underway (HSR). And then let the conservatives wear all the cuts and tax raises that will inevitably be needed in the 2030s.

I just want him to get that choo-choo past the point of no return.

He's not the only problem in that party....
Kory Teneycke, Ford's political strategist who helped him win his majority last year, recently went to BC to help Caroline Elliott run for BC Conservative leadership. I wonder if he was pushed out from Ford's inner circle. It seems like it coincided with Ford losing the plot with public opinion.

Another quarter billion to Ukraine in addition to the over $25 billion given to Ukraine since 2022. On a per capita basis this is probably on par with what the United States has sent to Ukraine. The difference is most of the American money was spent on buying American weapons. To the extent this $270 million is spent on weapons it will be spent on American made weapons at a time when Trump is in the process of destroying our economy. At a time when Canadians are struggling and are about to be struggling even more thanks to Trump's war on Iran this should anger every Canadian, but this story did not register any outrage in Canada. Carney says, "Ukraine's war is our war". No, it's not. We don't have a defense pact with Ukraine. It seems every time Carney meets with Zelensky in person (which is way too often) he feels compelled to hand over more of our money to Zelensky. Of course, the "official opposition" will be silent because they are afraid of losing Ukrainian/Canadian votes. If Carney is going to give a quarter billion dollars to Ukraine to buy US weapons why not try to leverage this for our advantage? If I was PM, I would call Trump and say that we will buy $270 million in American made arms to be sent Ukraine if Trump lifts all tariffs on Canadian automobiles. I would remind Trump that a good portion of the $25 BILLION we have already sent to Ukraine were spent on American-made weapons. Carney doesn't seem to understand the concept of leverage.

Why was this never a regular policy?

According to StatsCanada, excluding TBD asylum cases, there are 2,157,952 temporary residents in Canada, constituting approximately 5.20% of Canada's total population. Though I have to question StatsCan's methods if the government was not tracking the exits. Either way this is an insane number of temporary residents when Canada is facing a youth employment and overall housing crisis. The temporary work permit program should be rolled back to once again mostly apply to seasonal agricultural jobs. I'd like to see a 2 for 1 policy, with one new temporary permit issued for 2 verified exits.
