How the the province will accept the help given to them to fix this will tell us whether this was a structural or a political decision. That is, if they accept the help, then we can say that they where likely sincere in shutting it down and didn't know what else to do. If they don't, it's very likely this was never really about the structural issues to begin with and where probably lying like Trump about that. We can only hope it's the former.

The Current Ontario Science Centre needs a whole lot more then 19 million. We are talking about 300 million dollars for upgrades to the current facility.

eehhh it seems targeted towards green energy retrofits. Im sure the feds would be okay with ponying up money for it, if it only was for green upgrades.

I personally think they have more nefarious reasons for closing OSC, but yeah...
 
^I imagine that any Federal contribution would be a bit larger. I can guarantee you that they are part of what must be intense negotiations behind closed doors! 🚪 💰🔬🔭

I doubt so, but the Hamilton LRT cancellation was exactly this ploy if I remember correctly (it was previously entirely funded by Hamilton & the province, while its resurrected form now has federal funding).

Like what others have said, I think the excuse for closing down the OSC is really to prepare for the move down to Ontario Place, cut ongoing costs, and eventually offload an ageing, expensive facility; with the engineering report being the excuse given to the public.

I doubt there is really much to do with any redevelopment of the site itself, since the lands are city-owned. I think in the end, the city will be left holding onto the bag that is the OSC site.

Yea i read this a few days ago, just had to laugh at the absuridty.
We're going to spend tens of millions on the buildout and lease of a massive retail site that's ideally going to be open for maybe 2 years.
Like what's the point, just use that to keep the current one open.

Their next article really goes into where that original $450 million for the full...let's call it "revitalization" comes from.
It's sooo much less than that. While i'd prefer to get brand new exhibits "cosmetic upgrades" as he calls it. he really shows that this number really comes out of napkin math.

Two figures have been cited by the Ontario Government: $478 million and $369 million. The actual number is much less—around $200 million, or just $24 million for tackling priority repairs to keep the museum open for several years to come.

It's one of those cases where it doesn't matter if the government is right or wrong in doing this, rather it's about the fact they can do it seems more important to them.. especially.if it appears to be sticking it to the people who would naturally oppose this. Kinda like when they cut City Council in half...

...I hope that this isn't the case, but it's never good when government refuses to listen to reason...no matter how sound, researched and principled it is. Because being wrong here was never the issue in the first place. /sigh
 
I’m sorry but this whole ‘too expensive to renovate’ argument is absurd and getting very annoying! Roof issues of buildings this size are common and there are practical, time tested solutions out there. What would a Soviet engineer with smarts but limited resources have done? How about ask the Aga Khan Museum if there was ever a case in the Islamic world where a wide-span roof needed reinforcing in a way that wasn’t ugly? I bet there was! 🤪
