You seem to be a strong advocate for totalitarianism.

You oversimplify and conflate distinct contexts and ideas. Be specific when you make potentially slanderous statements. What about Bill Maher is so retrograde? He has advocated for reparations and retraining of police. He has been a supporter of BLM. He is also a strong advocate of free speech. When you make broad judgmental statements, provide quotes and proof of bad behaviour. I’m all for calling out injustice, but you have to be specific, like I am about your remarks.

Watch the interview with Peckford. Know that it was a long battle to establish rights and freedoms going back to the Rebellions of Upper and Lower Canada. Learn about the elitist Family Compact and the fact that Toronto’s own mayor, William Mackenzie, had once proposed that we join the US. If we can’t provide liberty to our people, the people will demand it, thankfully.

The convoy is composed of normal essential workers. They are drawing a line in the sand over restrictions, mandates, and the digital identification required to enjoy basic freedoms. Canada is not yet China. Nothing is guaranteed. If normal people don’t demand accountability from government, we really are in trouble.

Interestingly our constitutional monarchy may save us. If the Queen/Governor General discerns that the government is working against the will of the people, Parliament can be dissolved and an election mandated. Given Britain’s own long hard battles for freedom going back to the Magna Carta, the Pax Romana, and beyond, and seeing that Britain is eliminating restrictions and mandates, I’m hopeful. Our institutions may save us from tyranny. Maybe.

We had an election a few months ago, and polling shows the majority of the country supports restrictions on the unvaccinated. The GG isn't going to do shit because what you think is happening, isn't.

Let me ask you something. Does the majority (80+%) of Canadians who support mandates figure into your flawed imagining of what democracy is?

Are they also not comprised of normal essential workers?

Should a country be led by what a small percentage of truckers want?

Read Harari on digital totalitarianism. It’s not conspiracy theory. It’s our present reality. We are using algorithms and data to direct behaviour based on whatever metrics our government feeds into the system. You can be tracked and are tracked for your medical behaviour and when you leave the country. Any criteria can be added to the digital passport that you’re required to carry to enjoy basic freedoms. It’s not even a slippery slope. You are living under de facto totalitarianism. It’s unconstitutional.

However, you personally probably haven’t felt the implications yet. You will when you travel. You might if you’re forced to get your young kids vaccinated and boosted without regard to their unique health profiles. None of this is mysterious. Be careful what you wish for. Covid isn’t going away no matter how many restrictions and mandates are imposed, but there is no sunset clause and no guarantee that restrictions and mandates will be lifted. Again, earlier in the pandemic there were arguably good reasons for temporary emergency measures. Our constitution is there to ensure the constant review and justification of such measures. Quite simply, mandates, restrictions, and vaccine passports are no longer justified, if they ever were.

The Oakes Test:

First, the objective to be served by the measures limiting a Charter right must be sufficiently important to warrant overriding a constitutionally protected right or freedom.

Second, the party invoking s. 1 must show the means to be reasonable and demonstrably justified. This involves a form of proportionality test involving three important components.

To begin, the measures must be fair and not arbitrary, carefully designed to achieve the objective in question and rationally connected to that objective.

In addition, the means should impair the right in question as little as possible.

Lastly, there must be a proportionality between the effects of the limiting measure and the objective -- the more severe the deleterious effects of a measure, the more important the objective must be.
