Report on the Civic Hospital link to Dow's Lake Station.

Good news is, they picked the underpass and have a future proofed design.

Bad news is, they won't do anything beyond improving the crosswalk for a very long time (15 to 20 years).

Approved by Committee yesterday, though I don't what that means if anything in terms of steps to actually get the thing done.

Again from Jeffs newsletter

WRt to next council meeting:

"In our ward, I'm pleased that we'll likely pass a recommendation that an overhead connection between Dow's Lake station and the new Ottawa Hospital be the preferred option."

And overhead is a mistake. It's the below grade option that's preferred.

Not suggesting Ottawa needs a 22 storeys tower like Mississauga but I dislike we didn't opt for more height instead of the massive spread.

The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, a $13.9-billion “state-of-the-art” health-care centre that will rise up 22 storeys on the same site as the current Mississauga Hospital, will check in at 2.8 million sq. ft. in size when completed. That’s roughly three times the size of the current hospital, which first opened at the southwest corner of Hurontario Street and The Queensway West in 1958.

$13.9B! Ottawa's Civic only has a $2.8B budget.

The new Civic will be 12 floors at its highest, far taller than any other hospital on Ottawa The site is large enough for a more spread. A lower building is probably preferred to avoid chopping up services on multiple floors and to make evacuations easier.

A big part of future expansion will be adding floors to the west wing.
