Air was bad in Montréal yesterday. The STL has a policy of charging $1 fares the day after bad air quality days to promote environmentally friendly transportation. I’m trying to remember, but was there a similar promotion by any GTA agencies back when we had frequent smog days?
If only municipalities would do this but also tell employees to work from home unless in essential occupations, given the much wider availability of hybrid work arrangements post COVID. But that would annoy the downtown landlords.

I’m not sure many people know about this bus outside of Montreal. This is the Réchaud-Bus. It’s a former STM bus that has been converted into a mobile kitchen to serve meals to homeless and the less fortunate. The non-profit was inaugurated in 1995, and this is the third iteration of the bus. I had the privilege of riding it on Saturday. It is immaculate and well taken care of by the STM. I’m not sure if other cities have such a partnership, but it would be nice to see more of.

MONTREAL — The Réseau express métropolitain light rail line between downtown Montreal and the North Shore community of Brossard, Que., has begun a six-week shutdown today (Saturday, July 5) for testing in preparation of opening of most of the rest of the system later this year.

Service on the 10.3-mile first phase between Central Station and Brossard began in July 2023; the full 42-mile (67-kilometer), 25-station system is now expected to open in October, save for a short spur serving Montreal’s Trudeau Airport. The shutdown had been announced earlier this year [see “Most of Montreal light rail system …,” Trains News Wire, Feb. 14, 2025].

The CBC reports plans to mitigate the closure of the system includes a series of free shuttle buses and increased service on some Exo commuter rail routes. The REM is also scheduled to be free from its return on Aug. 18 through Aug. 31. More information is available here.

It does but the alternative was just opening the whole thing in 2025
Had the Griffintown station been commissioned earlier and opened with phase 1, I imagine they would continue running trains between there and Brossard with testing isolated to Gare Centrale and beyond. Running a temp service only between Île des Sœurs and Brossard would probably be under-utilized.

Basically taking a page out of Ottawa's book at this stage.
This is an unnecessary insult to Ottawa. Even Ottawa's integration testing when they did it a few months back for the east extension was nowhere near this disruptive (although its worth mentioning I guess that its a lot easier to do integration testing when you just need to shut down some fringe suburban stations, and not the only station located in the downtown core).

Ottawa is still doing some integration testing and maintenance work, but they're trying to make it less disruptive. In July, the closure is a Sunday morning plus a full weekend where a bus replaces the train. On the other hand, they ran full service for free all day Canada and many people who never ride the train got a chance to use it.

Toronto Line 3 SRT: "Is 6 weeks all you can do? Try forever 😏"
Perhaps you can update us on Montreal Line 3 that Premier Lesage announced some time ago.

Or Line 7 that was printed on the maps in the Metro trains under Premier Levesque, along with Line 5 to Montreal West and Lasalle? They never announced the go ahead of Line 6, Line 8, Line 10, and Line 11 under Levesque - only the planning stage. Are they progressing?

What was Line 9 BTW - I've never heard!

How's the Montreal streetcar system. Is it still bigger than Toronto's?

Any update on the LRT from Montreal to Granby? They seem to have been upgrading that for quite a while now.

1. Two years since opening and the local (and some Anglo) media still calling it “light rail”. Maybe we should start calling Vancouver’s Skytrain and future Ontario Line “express tramway” from now on. Like seriously, journalists, do your homework, even ChatGPT gets it right - automated light metro or métro léger.

2. Living in Montreal there’s been alot of grumbling on the media about the 6 week closure. But 2 weeks in, things seem to be okay especially with the the increased STM and EXO bus frequencies and free shuttles. The REM started publicizing this shutdown since Jan 2025 so there’s a lot of advanced communication in the local media and on social media to get people mentally prepared. This isn’t some random shutdown announced last min.

3. If it’s only 6 weeks shutdown so we could get 40 KM + of new rapid transit coverage and two new lines (plus rebuilt Mont Royal tunnel) opened shortly after, I’m all for it. Those new lines would be a game changer for people living in West Island.

It's Quebec and CDPQ that branded in light rail. That some of the media hasn't jumped fast enough to adopt their rebranding doesn't seem to be an issue.

TTC branded Line 3 as "subway" at one point. I don't recall the media jumping on that one either.

Is it light metro? I thought the capacity wasn't that low. Intermediate metro perhaps, like Line 3. Is the capacity really less than Line 3?
