The amount of large arterial roads cutting up this area into weird shapes is really astounding

Wow, what an interesting and almost baroque-like arterial road layout. Such a shame that the land utilization around it is so shite (other than the hospital ofc).

Would love to see midrise frontage and wider sidewalks along Kingsway, Princess Elizabeth and 109, but that's probably never going to happen.

The odd geometry of roads in the area is due to the original 'City Beautiful' plan for Kingsway and Princess Elizabeth Ave, there they'd intersect in an 'X' shape through the former HBC Reserve lands, as they were more or less empty for decades as Edmonton grew around it. The below photos from from 1924 and 1948, respectively, and you can see the general 'X' shape with a very defined Kingsway. Ultimately, the southwest section of PE Avenue that would've completed the X was never finished (Airway Park is where that would be now), which leaves us with the road network we see today.

Yup, the plan originally was to look something like this: https://www.edmonton.ca/sites/default/files/public-files/documents/PDF/EAM-34_FULL.pdf
