"The Yonge line is successful because it follows areas of mixed uses and high densities along most of the route."

But Yonge is also lined with some of the lowest density areas in Toronto. It is successful primarily because of the massive number of bus routes that dump passengers onto it.
 
Every stop along Yonge is ringed with towers save for Lawrence and York Mills (to a lessor extent) so there certainly is more density on Yonge than on the other lines. Having said that the buses do help.
