This is probably the biggest reason. While I don't know for sure why Bay has such narrow entrances I think that it was a combination of:
Lack of space - trying to fit LRT entrances around preexisting buildings and roads. This is also likely why the entrances are not directly on Jasper Ave where visibility and common use would be better
I'm not sure how that has anything to do with lack of funds? The logical design at the time was entrances that face away from Jasper Ave so that straight down the stairs opens into the station. Adding twists and turns to allow a stairway that opens to Jasper Ave seems like it would introduce safety issues by adding corners. And I don't know about entrances being forgotten... we're talking less than 40' from the intersection. It's not like these entrances were concealed half a block away from Jasper Ave! While Corona Station entrances on 107 St are bigger, the southside entrance probably can thank the fire at the Corona Hotel for opening up real estate for it. I'm guessing the car dealership on the northside was gone by the time they built the extension, and hence more space there. Bay Station just doesn't seem to have had the space space availableLack of funds - The pedway entrances all face away from Jasper Ave and the stairs go directly down to the connection tunnels instead of coming down directly from Jasper ave and doing a boot leg turn at the bottom that would probably have been sky lighted. With them facing away, the entrances get forgotten about and checks of the entrances require turning up side streets.
Yeah, the business community wanted it.Assumptions about usage - Bay station, while quite lovely at station level, has always seemed to be almost an afterthought station. I suspect it was primarily built to serve the Bay department store and only secondarily to accept passengers from surrounding businesses. I severely doubt that anyone thought of it as a high traffic station.

And maybe she remembered me because I have a weird foreign name.
