Please tell me you understand the difference between a federal government promoting and backing its own in house projects, vs sponsoring and backing a project being entirely helmed by a completely separate government...
I do understand that difference. I also understand that if Carney wins the leadership race, he will be looking where to run. He is from Edmonton. So, if I were him, to secure my seat, and a fww others, saying they will fund the same process that happened in ON and QC could be a small thing that might give him his seat. To be fair, outside of the QC-W corridor, The C-E corridor is the next place that makes sense. Extending it to Banff or Jasper or both would be giving them a line of over 700km. It would also give them stable jobs while the rest of the world sorts out the mess down south.

A discussion on a Facebook page highlighted the fact that sleepers are fully booked on trains that are still 'off season'. It highlights the fact that there is still a demand year round for the train. I realize adding cars to the consist is not that easy, but, Via should look at next year and add more cars to times that have been historically busy this year and previous years. I think the normal off season consist is 10cars, where as the summer consist is over 20. If those sleeper cars as selling out in the winter, if possible add a car to allow them to be booked. It would be interesting if there was the demand year round for the longer consist.

From Facebook:

Update regarding the Sudbury RDC's for VIA 185 & 186.

Operaring and maintenance crews have said that RDC-2 6219 has been retired and is a parts source for RDC-2 6217, which is also starting to show more signs of wear and tear and mechanical issues as 6217 and RDC-4 6250 have been operating in pair since October. RDC-1 6105 has also been down and out for the last 4 months as it needs a new control stand among a few other things so it has been just 6217 and 6250 for the route and with tourist season coming up... no word yet as to what conventional head end powered equipment is coming.

They operate Fairchild Swearingen Metroliners which seat 19.

Memory of this Salon article triggered:

At Fairchild, down in San Antonio, the guys with the pocket protectors were faced with a challenge: How to take 19 passengers and make them as uncomfortable as possible? Answer: Stuff them side-by-side into a 6-foot-diameter aluminum tube. Attach a pair of the loudest turbine engines ever made, the Garrett TPE-331, and go easy on the soundproofing. For the crew, provide the tiniest, most ergonomically vicious cockpit possible. Remove the autopilot. All of this for a mere $2.5 million a copy.

(Somewhere out there is a retired Fairchild engineer feeling very insulted. He deserves it.)

ICYMI Train 185/186 is canceled due to mechanical failure.
May be the end of the Budd cars. Hopefully something can be done to keep the service running.

The „mechanical issue“ in question:
Yes, there was a minor derailment last week on 186 at Missanabie. From what we heard, ice pack in a grade crossing caused one axle of the RDC-4 (6250) to ride up off the track. Cars stayed upright, but because that truck went on the ground they’re required to replace both axles before it can carry passengers again. So 6250 is out of service for at least a little while.

That train eventually deadheaded back to Sudbury, and the Saturday/Sunday trip was cancelled.

Forunately for us, on Monday they were able to get 6219 (which hadn’t been in service since some time last year) tuned up, spun on the turntable, and paired with 6217. So we had two RDC-2s for our trip out and back, instead of the usual RDC-2+RDC-4.

That's it! Grade separation for all passenger routes! It's the only answer.

Lol.....Shhh... all the bureacracy needs is another reason to cancel trains..... "we can't afford to deal with the ice pack, and it's a danger.... so let's kill the service".....

FWIW ice pack in mudrails at level crossings is a material concern for freight and passenger alike, and generally does get a lot of attention during winter months. Unfortunately the field forces can't be everywhere all the time...

I suspect with the weight of modern mainline freight locomotives, the concern is somewhat lessened.

Considering that steam engines were heavier, you why do you think it's only modern mainline freight locos that would lessen the concern?

For the record, CN and CP both have minor derailments every year to flangeway buildup.
