...it's never about shame for the awful things they done to their constituencies that forces these people to resign, it always about their hands that get caught in the kitty jar. /bleh
Of course, because if they truly felt shame they wouldn't do such things in the first place.

We'll have to see what new polling says, but Blair tried this idea 2 decades ago and it went so well he retreated in full.

Starmer seems to have really bad political instincts going from one crisis to the next. I'm not sold this will be any different.

He seems to be a real weather vane. He'll say one thing and then immediately after, walk it back, or do something else worse.

I’ve just booked two weeks in London for July 2026. I think I’ll renew my UK passport in time for the trip. My Canadian-born adult kid’s UK passport expired two decades ago, so I’ll look to renew theirs too.

I don't see what's such a big deal about ID cards - you need a SIN to work legally in Canada, and it is basically a number attached to a database with personal information, and you are being asked for it by prospective employers. Said number is also attached to a number of other ancillary systems around social assistance, taxation and pension. Frankly it should be the default national ID.

Also it's funny to see the UK getting all knackered up over it, considering they used it in their own overseas colonies.

I take your point, but mine was really political. The British electorate at the moment is rather polarized and non-trusting.

It was an idea with previously visceral negative reaction and its coming from a pol who seems to get nothing but negative reactions.

There is likely a case for the idea, but he probably isn't the one to be making it.

Some Royal news.

Prince Andrew handled the Epstein matter stupidly. He should have admitted to having sex with the 17 year old Virginia Giuffre in New York, London and on Epstein’s island, as she claimed. He should have followed that admission that he was not aware that she was being trafficked or coerced, and since the age of consent in NY was 17 and 16 in the UK, he assumed he was not breaking any laws. He could then close with a statement that while he was not breaking the law, the very idea of having sex with a person the same age as his daughters is now repugnant and he is ashamed. And lastly, he will go to the US to face the Justice system and meet with Giuffre or her representatives if they will have him, to discuss restitution and help her, and could have become a spokesperson (with Giuffre’s consent for doing better). That’s what any damage control expert would have told him to do. Instead he chose the cowardly exit, and now will live the rest of his life, presumably several decades as an outcast.

Giuffre is dead, so he can’t meet with her

He isn’t going to talk about the law, because he thinks he is above it as evidenced by what Giuffre wrote. And I’m, sure he didn’t give two hoots about her age at the time and wasn’t giving a thought to whether his actions were legal or not.

Plus his arrogance isn’t going to let him admit to anything. So now he gets kicked out of family Christmas and can stay home and pout.

Do I think all of these men who abused vulnerable girls should face punishment? Absolutely. Do I think it will happen? Probably one or two scapegoats and that will be it.

He should be in jail, period.

Sigh…. I meant when the accusations first were made. That was Andrew’s opportunity to make the best moves. As you say, arrogance, and I would argue cowardice got in the way.

Arrogance and cowardice is the least of his issues when he is sleeping with an underaged girl for someone of his age and stature - it's a damning indictment of his utter lack of moral fibre, and the royals didn't even do a Edward VIII on him the moment they got wind of it.

Agreed, from a moral (and this father's) POV, but legally, outside of perjury, of what charge? You're invited to some mate's place where a young, but legally aged person offers you sex. You don't know she's being coerced, and maybe don't want to know. A good man would have left, but the law might not see a crime if our man stays. Andrew's a right bastard and creep, but I don't see anyway he'd end up in jail. Besides Maxwell, has anyone associated with Epstein been convicted and jailed for anything? The rich and famous are hard to convict, but what about the lower tier enablers? For example, Sarah Kellen (Vickers), Lesley Groff, and Nadia Marcinkova were all long-time recruiters of young females for Epstein, and have never even been charged.
