The escalators weren't just turned off at Eglinton Square, the second floor was vacated, they put everything on the main level. It would seem odd if they've reopened the second floor to the public.

So here's one I have to walk back...............sorta.

I was in here recently...........not only are the escalators working, they have reopened the second floor.

Of course its a giant heap now that could be mistaken for a Value Village........ but I digress..........

Retail insider posted pics of the hoardings:

I was in Saks about a week or so before Christmas day. At the peak of the Christmas shopping rush. The store was eerily quiet. The Eaton Centre was jammed packed, streets were busy, The Bay was a little more busy than usual, but Saks was just dead! No one in there shopping. I had the store to myself.

As of 5 PM today, the era of Hudsons Bay at Burlington Centre in Burlington Ontario has come to a close. The era of a department store at Burlington Centre has come to a close. RIP Sears/Bay space at Burlington Centre, 1968-2025

The mall itself remains fairly busy, or at least anytime I drop by Denningers, it is. You have a Bay a short drive away at Mapleview, so the loss at the Burlington Mall is not a tragedy. Historically it does mark a turning point as the Mall dates to 1968.

Mapleview also lost its other 'defining' department store, Sears, some time ago, but appears to motor along just fine.

The Burlington Mall property, and that is a sizable chunk of real estate at that end of the mall, along with the associated parking, might possibly be a real candidate to lop the whole "Bay' portion off and run 4 (plus?) towers running from Fairview to Prospect in alignment with Dynes. Fairview is becoming, or will become, a bit of a high density corridor running east/west, and any development would just fit in.

Saks Global might be closing its Saks Fifth Avenue Queen Street store. (reported by WWD.)

Something I've been expecting for ages.

The store is under-invested in and now low-performing.

That said, I don't have a definitive confirmation. It simply aligns w/what I've been hearing for awhile.

IF true, (in the near term), I expect an announcement shortly (other store closings are anticipated). If not......well, it will hang around a bit longer.

But anything other than Sak's exiting Canada would be a surprise.

What is less clear/more cloudy is the rest of HBC.

Sad, but not unexpected, hope the name plate survives under better management.

I had been told this was going to happen a couple of years ago.....and periodically ever since.

I wonder what this means for the retail landscape with Sears and Eatons gone. HBC was the only big player left.

Not sure yet.

I'm given to understand there is a possible plan to retain some of the store network and the nameplate. But we'll have to see if that's viable.

Not sure how viable that is of a plan right now considering the company has been financially struggling for a long while now. At best you could keep the ones like Queen Street, downtown Montreal, the iconic locations, but even that might be too far gone to save...

It would, I imagine, require dedicated and deep pocketed ownership with a vision and a medium to long time horizon.

Is that out there, for this brand? Not sure. TBD
