Tourists may not have Hamilton high on their radar as they pass by en route from Toronto to Niagara Falls. The city's image had long been mired by its heavy industry as you see the ugly steelworks driving past on the QEW, but this city of about 800,000 people is not just a commuter town, but also worth visiting for its mix of history, lakefront, and waterfalls.

As a day trip from Toronto, consider going on the weekend to utilize the very affordable GO Weekend Pass for unlimited travel on their suburban network.

Awesome Open Streets event today - King closed from John to Gage. Lots of people, booths, music, and an awesome pride event in the village too!

Those up for Cycling. Take the GO to Aldershot> From there (and there are a variety of routes) work your way generally westwards through Hidden Valley Park towards the RBG, or along Plains Road to the RBG Area (Separated Bike Lanes) and eventually then meeting up with York Blvd (also Separated Bike Lanes) and the Bayview Junction area (Valley Inn Road), then continue along York Blvd, cycling along and past the Burlington Heights (cue your War of 1812 History) and end Phase One of your trip at Dundurn Castle. If you know where to look there are cemeteries along this route (Woodland, Hamilton etc) with interesting and historical burials that link to Canadian History. Once you reach Dundurn, then Hamilton beckons> Continue along York into the downtown areas of Hamilton or swing towards Barton and head for the waterfront - Bayfront, Pier 4, HMCS Haida etc. Not a bad days jaunt.

Durand area...
