Hmmm. I regularly backtrack from one line to another at Union, but perhaps I’m a bit of the exception. Presto had no difficulty processing that, without a tap on/off at union, and I have been farechecked enough times that the system seems to accept it.
Timewise, Mimico to Union to Mount Dennis for example can be favourable to TTC
I have never done so without changing trains, but I regularly hear crews announcing where the trainset is going next. Depending on the length of layover, they may declare the train out of service but then reboard, I imagine.
It should not be a surprise to anyone that the trsinsets snd crews cycle this way… it’s just good utilisation of equipment.

I was confused why you wouldn't tap at union (to get the transfer discount) Till you mentioned being on the same train the entire trip.

Not sure which thread is most relevant to post this but I have a senior relative and it was interesting to see the TTC $2.25 senior fare will actually get partially refunded when tapping on the GO down to $1.97 so it's actually cheaper to take a multi mode trip.

If you tap twice at Union within a short time it gives an error message, thinks you just forgot and tapped twice. It seems to give the benefit if you just tap on at the start and off at the end of your trip.

Sssssh!

Seniors fares are an incredible bargain. A great bonus for seniors.

For me when I press override at my first stop it seems to let me tap again a 2nd time at union (to tap back on)

and LOL I'll try not to screw up a good thing 🤣

I believe you're doing this correctly.

I don't think you're supposed to tap on/off at Union for a train only trip, even if switching GO trains at Union. Once at the beginning of your trip (e.g., Mimico GO) and again at the end of your trip (e.g., Bloor GO). This is how I've always done it.

I NEVER take transit.........what happens if you forget to tap-out?
After four hours your card gets charged as "tap off not detected". I don't know what the exact math is, but I believe it's the longest possible trip you could've taken without transferring-- so it can be quite hefty, especially if you forget to tap off when you tapped on at Union Stn.

You can technically get charged less than you are supposed to if you are transferring, but it's still considered fare evasion.

It used to be quite hefty ... but when I've seen it in the last year or so, the biggest penalty is paying the regular fare, rather than getting the Presto discount. It used to be it was pretty obvious from my history what I'd done wrong, and they've always happily refunded me.

I think they've added some pragmatism to the equations. For example, tapping in at Danforth, then forgetting to tap out at Union, but tapping onto the subway downtown ... and charging you the non-discounted fare to Union rather than to Oshawa like they used to. So no reason to call them.

It would be interesting to see some examples.

Back in february I messed one up where I arrived at Union, tapped off, then stopped for a snack...and then, couldn't remember if I had tapped off, ao I tapped again. Turned out that I had in fact tapped off, so the second tap off was logged as a new tap on. There was about twenty minutes between the two taps. Sure enough, when I checked online a day later, the mistaken second tap off was logged as a new tap on, and I was charged a failure to tap off charge of about $12. But.... by the next day, before I could reach GO, the charge reversed itself. The false "tap on" still shows in my card history, but there is no deduction to my balance.
I find that there are frequently recalculations, possibly the result of tap data taking a day or more to all collect in my account.
