Culinary Unicorn's grand opening is on Jan 31

Why does it always take so bloody long to get a liquor license?
I thought we were supposed to do away with all this red tape and bureaucratic shenanigans?

Liquor License comes after Final Health Inspection has passed (Disability compliance, etc.). It is the last of the final 3 inspections. If there is a hitch with Health or with Building and Safety before that -- and there often is -- then the whole procession moves to new dates.

Reign Lounge (Jasper / 115 St). Doors are chained and padlocked. Guess not enough folks were interested in the $10,000 drinks package.

With their $10,000 VIP packages that catered only to a handful of wannabe gangsters out there....pffftttt.......piss off! "Let's pretend we're in Vegas.......woo hoo!"

According to Google Maps, Reign is temporarily closed. Maybe it will reopen after there's been a change in ownership.

Times are changing, going out to nightclubs is not as big a thing as it once was. Also I realize it is always hard to get it right for the market, obviously this one was not the cup of tea for too many people.

A lot of nightclubs come and go, hopefully something else will come along here that appeals to more people.

I don't personally care for these kinds of clubs, but I think there's probably a market for this type of place if it's in the right location. Ice District adjacent would do well for the after-game/event crowd, The old Healy Ford building would make a pretty cool warehouse-style club while it waits for eventual development. WEM used to have a lot of success with the mega-clubs, but I'm guessing the cost of leasing that much space there would be outrageous these days.

I think the nightclub scene has somewhat dispersed due to: 1) less drinking/concerns about safety for women especially amongst young people, 2) more large festivals that people go to instead vs weekends in their hometown club 3) bars finding more stability/less risk in having more of a restaurant concept with certain nights that are more “club like”. Double dragon by Fu’s would be a good example. Or even central social, beercade, Greta, banquet.

The clubs like chvrch of John, reign, etc are harder and harder to make work I think.

And of course Edmontons always struggled due to climate and urban landscape.

Everything cycles, needs change, ideas of nightlife change, but Edmonton certainly needs more nightlight options and more people out and about in the evenings.
