It's actually intended to be right at the Unionville GO station.
I'm still waiting to hear if this is dependent on getting approved by Markham city council. It doesn't look to be overly disruptive, but of course we don't know the details of the financial arrangements.

I can see it bringing in a ton of money for the City so I don't see that being an issue.

This is just the start of a trend to move venues out of Toronto I think. Eventually, they will need to replace Rogers Centre and Scotiabank Arena but there is hardly any space available to build a new stadium. Demolishing and building 100 feet from a Condo is also not idea.

I think you will see more venues moved outside Toronto. If this is successful, I can also see the Jays or Leafs moving north of Steeles in much the same way that the Senators were in Kanata.

The chance of there not being an outcry from those living near Unionville GO is, I suspect, very close to zero

You are a riot! Aren’t the Senators building a new arena downtown because Kanata is useless?! And there are many locations in the central city for new facilities. We’re now more multi-nodal in an Asian\EU sense than the more provincial NA model.

Just listened to the live stream and not only is there a 5 year agreement in place, one of the speakers mentioned the plan is to be in Markham for decades, so RIP Toronto Indy.

On top of the World Cup, one of the reasons cited for moving was development happening at Ex Place. Must be referring to the new hotel planned at E-Sports arena (if it's still happening).

The IndyCar circuit is not permanent and is dismantled after each event, whereas the arenas and stadiums you're referring to are permanent. Sports franchises learned their mistakes in the 90s that building giant venues in the suburbs was a mistake and it's why most of them escaped back to their city centres. If the Senators were fine with Kanata they wouldn't be leaving a perfectly good building and going (back) Downtown. Suburban stadiums are actually incredibly poor ideas.

Think of every MLB stadium in existence. Are any of them out in the sticks?

I'm fine with this. As much as people complain about the King car going down for TIFF, I get tired of having Exhibition and environs shut down for a weekend for a race that could easily take place elsewhere. Let Markham have something fun and let Exhibition develop some of its parking lots and streets.

And, really, if they're anything like the NLL team, it'll still be the Toronto Indy despite taking place in Markham.

The closest area of houses looks like it's at Helen Ave, Unity Gardens Dr, and Greenberg Gate intersection. I have no idea if or how much some may be against it, but if they are, it probably doesn't help much that this is suddenly announced after apparently being planned behind closed doors (and I'm guessing by just the mayor and his staff) since at least April with absolutely no input from the general public.

That whole press conference and even all the articles I've seen so far seem to completely avoid any mention of this likely having go though some kind of approval process, and just assume it's a completely done deal with no chance of anything that could stop it.
