With a potential Grande Prairie route, there is going to have to be lots of track laid northwest of Fox Creek to connect to Grande Prairie or else upgrading the Grande Cache route which will be longer. Could also connect Fahler to Rycroft but this would be some extra distance too. Lots of $$$$ to get just the line built or upgraded.

Honestly other than EllisDon being involved, I thought this thread was just going to die off as quickly as it came. Strong support for HSR in Alberta not only by Albertans but also a conservative government was certainly not on my bingo card.

I honestly have some hope for the first time ever regarding rail in Alberta for this reason. If the Conservative agovernment is really pushing for this to happen and is genuinely interested, NDP or any other party would probably be just as keen if not more!

HSR is a wet dream. We have far greater priorities like regional rail, urban rail etc.
The Alberta government has been very clever in its communication to tie this all together with commuter and regional rail.

However, I feel when this starts to go beyond conceptual it will just be commuter rail and service to the airports that they will be pushing.

Approve this already and either Ellis Don do this or simply get a Japanese or Chinese company who has already built 1000s of kilometers of hsr, come in and build it for us.
There's no plan yet to approve. Timelines are into the next 15 years.

Up to 5 years of study. Again. So construction start is 2030 at the earliest. Consultants making $3.9 B. Again.
Actually not a study, it's the design phase. Design/build consortium has been selected, HSR selected, route selected, construction could start in 5 years time if we want as a country to get it done.

Green Light for Development of a High-Speed Rail Network Between Toronto and Québec City

There is no justification to run the train to Quebec City. This will add unnecessary costs to phases of planning and design rendering the whole thing unviable
