I'm not sure that whatever you might get in trade from a single team in the middle of the season would come close to what you might be able to sign with the additional salary cap room gained if he were to leave, not to mention the mid-season disruption and adjustments that would come with a trade.

I hope he doesn't leave - without question he is both a special player and one who has given more than 100% since the day he signed here when you think about his living here year round and his support for his team-mates on and off-ice. But if he does, I wish him all the best wherever he ends up and there's no way I would deprive him of that potentially last opportunity to win a Stanley Cup wearing an Oilers jersey by trading him prematurely. If that means we get "nothing in return" but that potential opportunity to win a cup this year, I'm okay with that. He's more than earned whatever he decides to take and wherever he decides to take it from.
