I suppose they don't fit in with the old mythology of us being this cold winter city from the era before climate change became noticeable.

Its going to be in sunny and in the mid 30's for the next week or so. Places with outdoor pools or water are probably going to be very popular now.

Evolution Wonderlounge is moving to Jasper Ave and Rebranding as Evo, with an opening date around mid April!

I don't understand how Edmonton has just one official gay bar/club. From my experience, there are a lot of queer people here and even just straight people who would be interested in going to one. Having something like Evo on Whyte Ave would be so nice.

Edmonton has(had?) a lot of queer friendly spaces which hurts the demand for an LGBTQ specific bar. Back when there was multiple gay bars, basically one or the other would be busy depending on the night. There was even a lesbian bar, but the times I went it was never really that busy. In a way it’s kind of nice that Edmonton is more or less open minded and people can feel relatively safe anywhere (less so if your visibly different in any way). But it scary that things might be slipping backwards, and I worry about security at the new location. There’s already misinformed idiots online outraged that the space will be open to all ages before 9pm as a restaurant…like there’s going to be courses held on how to “turn” gay or something…🤦‍♂️😂

Very true! The Buckingham, The Tavern, and other places I would consider like "half" gay bars in some sense and they're nice places. I'll definitely be checking out Evo when it opens though for sure.

Also wow, that's so funny and disheartening at the same time. They literally say the place will be family friendly until 9 pm, like any other daytime restaurant or lounge. It's almost like people think that anything to do with gay or LGBTQ people is inherently inappropriate, which is hilarious because we're just existing like everybody else. Also for what it's worth, being surrounded by straight people, culture and romance sure as hell didn't turn me straight so I don't know how people believe it works the other way...

Yes, there used to be more gay bars, some busier than others but they also had a different mix of customers so some were able to survive for many years. Some were more pub like, others more dance clubs.

I agree more social acceptance has made it easier to go to friendly spaces and reduced demand, which is not a bad thing and there are other social reasons people do not go to bars and clubs as much as years ago.

Kooks have been around a long time, but seem emboldened these days. They like to create and spread misinformation particularly on some social media where they can get away with it, which unfortunate and concerning.

Immediately, “and it’s a heave, hoe, coming down the plain, all the beets and barley and all the other grain” came to mind. I know I’ve got it slightly wrong, but that song always ended the night so by that time mental capacity/memory was diminished. “Something something, Regina’s mighty shores”
