What do you think of this project?

This is going to be another beautiful project when completed. At least the City is leading the way with fine architecture for libraries and community centres; that fact should at some point start to embarrass some Edmonton developers.
The big rec centers (Let alone the nice smaller ones). Meadows, Terwillegar, even Clareview are very nice. Do other cities fund their rec centers like this, if not, what opposes them?

I think most do if you look at places like Spruce Grove, Sherwood Park, St. Albert, Fort Sask, and others have invested in facilities like this because of their importance to communities they serve. Rec centers really serve as some of the best community gathering places that municipalities offer.

Canada's investment in hockey over the last century has made us pretty good at building large indoor sports and recreation facilities nationwide. Edmonton has great rec centres, but even small towns in Canada will often have great facilities.

Sherwood Park is getting another field house facility starting later this year. St Albert has preliminary plans for a new rec centre pool facility in the NW. I have seen some new ones across Canada but not to the extent that we see in the metro region.

I think one of the first (and best in terms of design inside) of the multi-use rec centres was Millennium Place in Sherwood Park - swimming pool, wave pool, track, fitness centre, 2 arenas, 2 indoor soccer pitches, gymnasium. It opened in 2001 for only $22.25 million. It was so popular, an expansion was required about 10 years later - expanded gym, change rooms, fitness centre and studio spaces, skating area, retail, physio. By that time, the limited additional work nearly doubled the cost.

If I remember correctly, MP had the second most visitors per year after WEM in the Edmonton region at it's peak as it became a major event centre for sports and market type events year-round.

^ Have to disagree. Other Major cities like Calgary and Vancouver fail to deliver the same quality of rec centre. Lots of vancouver rec centres are tiny and falling apart.
That’s not true in Calgary. While we don’t have any proper field houses, Seton and Royal Oak YMCA’s, Genesis Center, and Vivo are all comparable and just as big/multi fictional as what is being constructed for Lewis Farms. Here are some pics:

You're missing the point there stranger......YEG and surrounding area outclasses YYC 2:1 in the realm of field houses, Community rec centers, community pools etc. You just listed a bunch of private enterprise centers, ie - YMCA's - we have plenty of those to match yours ++++ we have city built rec centers - which unfortunately YYC sucks at.
