YEG would need a domestic airline to have a YEG hub strategy. Westjet has a reliever hub of sorts in YEG but would need Air Canada to make it a bit of a west/east connection hub to make the numbers really pop and give some viability to European/Asian flights.

YEG may be able to theoretically support one in each direction but that would require all passengers heading in that direction to be choosing those flights rather than what might happen in the real world due to airline allegiance or price where they would connect elsewhere.

At some point if population growth continues to be strong the regional size may force the issue from a foreign or even domestic airline perspective but probably need to get to 2+ Mil people before starting to entertain that thought.

I think that is exactly what is happening. If Edmonton has 8Mil passengers and Calgary has 17-18Mil. How many of Calgary’s passengers originate from Edmonton. I’d be willing to bet about 2-3Mil. I will never fly out of YYC because I feel Like I’m giving the finger to YEG but I know lots of people who do. My BIL and his family of 6 had booked a July flight to ATL. Now that it’s cancelled they are flying out of YYC, and worse yet, they are driving down to Calgary. So YYC will have 12 passenger numbers from this particular family in July and 0 for YEG. I honestly believe if nobody went to Calgary for flights, we would have 2-3 million more passengers and more flights because of it.

This city and our airport seem to take 2 steps forward and then 1.96 steps back, every fricken time. It’s like a punch in the gut every week.

Even *if* hardly anyone Edmonton YEG connected in Calgary YYC still doesn’t (guarantee) YEG more flights than YYC . As it’s up to airlines which routes they operate ✅.
YYC gets connecting passengers from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, British Columbia, Northern Canada & 60,000-80,000+ US connecting passengers too.

YYC being closure to the Canada 🇨🇦/US🇺🇸 border compared to YEG , will always have an advantage over YEG on (US passenger traffic by air/ land) year round. Even for Asia / Europe YYC has some advantages too.

Blah blah blah. YYC Blah blah blah. Driving. Blah blah blah. Hubs Blah blah blah. Flatline for TWELVE F*CKING YEARS. None of this is new what is so special about the last 12 years. UCP handing out money to YYC to better connect Alberta? Why isn’t there a public outcry and media campaign and lobbying by the powers that be like there was over the arena fiasco? What are the board of directors doing in that regard? We have a mishmash of directors from every community in the area whereas YYC are predominantly from Calgarys chamber of commerce. No way the would let something like that go unchallenged. No leadership here what exactly are they doing?
Frustration from someone who volunteers countless hours for an organization that doesn’t seem to showing the required leadership.

Typical government favouritism.
Apparently they’d rather pump all the funds into one airport rather than try and facilitate growth at both.
Disappointing but let’s be real, these sorts of sneaky games with funding are commonplace amongst the UCP.

So call them out like they did with the arena. The silence is deafening

Unfortunately for Edmonton, we are too close to the WS hub in YYC and they have so much feed from other cities connecting through there already that they can offer more routes/frequencies that YEG just can’t. Personally, for me, nothing beats getting off a flight and being in bed 45 minutes later, but I can see why people would drive down to Calgary if they can save a couple hundred bucks (multiple that by 3-4 if you have a family).

Same reason the Quebec City and Ottawa airports have such limited flights given similar population #’s to YEG. Their close proximity to AC’s Montreal hub means people will just drive to YUL for better route timings, frequencies that work better for their schedule or prices because of more competition.

Didn’t work last time.
The stop the Calgary habit got people talking about it. The majority of folks out there are completely clueless about the implications of their choices.
That 'stop the Calgary habit' campaign should always be running when there is a battle of Alberta in football and hockey.

Those conditions existed before 2014 what has changed since. $70 mil from the UCP to YYC to promote direct flights to Alberta. Last time I checked we are still a part of Alberta and pay taxes as well. Where is our share?

What if Edmonton tried to push for high speed rail to Fort Mac, Grand Prairie, Saskatoon, and Jasper. Make the region competitive and attractive and the flights will follow.

I suppose Ottawa is comparable to Edmonton population wise, but Quebec City is much smaller and Montreal is still much larger than Calgary which is where I feel this example falls apart.

Ottawa also probably loses some flights due to Toronto which while further away than Montreal is even bigger. There is no city 3 to 4 times bigger than Edmonton in the same province or a couple hours away.

High speed rail can’t subsist on serving communities of 50,000 people 300-500km away. Heck I don’t think it’s even feasible between Calgary and Edmonton and it’s likely detrimental to EIA if it ever happens,
