"The real good news, though, is that along with all the enormity of the project, it’s also got a chance to succeed as a people place." - Davis Staples

"This is 30 acres of a master-planned community in the heart of the city. People compare this to L.A. Live, but we’re doing in five years what they did in 23.” - Glenn Scott

"The foundation of our strategy for the Ice District was an integrated sports and entertainment district with the ability to attract independent events of all different sizes and all different types." - Tim Shipton

"Adding the popular Brewhouse brand further builds the Ice District reputation as a prime destination for locals and visitors who are looking for a night of endless entertainment, from a meal before a hockey game to overlooking events in Ice District Plaza.” - Tim Shipton

Glenn Scott and Tim Shipton have an excuse: It was literally their job to say those things!

What's David Staples'?

well there is a whole day of banking extravaga one can experience here at least.
Well not everything can be done on line, such as depositing or withdrawing cash, so it is still a needed service for people who live and work downtown.

However, the Bank District doesn't have much appeal beyond that. I doubt this is what the developer envisioned, but better tenants that pay their rent than even more empty spaces.

It is a competition, but Lorne actually has a few surprising moments. For instance, for a while he said nice things about Mayor Iveson, which I didn't expect at all. Staples seems to be all UCP, all the time.
I remember when my ECON 101 prof always used to flame Lorne Gunter in class and casually mention how worthless the Edmonton Sun is as a newspaper 😂

With the proximity to MacEwan U. and with two key properties on the western fringe of Phase I and with Phase II also in close proximity to MacU I could see Katz taking advantage of this student housing incentive. I could see, then, the loading up of the full potential of the tower above existing podium to realize a total vertical rise of 42 storeys (including the podium); I could see a similar high-rise on their land on 104th Street (40+ storeys) and I could see Phase II kicking off with a smaller mid-rise structure north of the existing Arena (maybe 25 storeys) just west of the new event centre.
I would hope that Hariri Pontarini would be re-engaged as design architect for these efforts.
