Uhhhhhh anyone know about this starting? Daily Hive is pretty junk reporting and the article references 0 about how it decided it was starting this year?

Or did this article just read this thread and post an article about the speculation of it starting this year and now I’m posting about the speculation which originated here? Circular error?
What does "in the works" actually mean? I really don't like such vague statements that could mean anything from not officially dead yet to starting construction tomorrow. Lazy journalism here.

It’s sad but it seems like this hotel plans are cancelled.

“Jay Robinson, the president of of Quinco Financial, said his company scrapped plans for a hotel across the street from The SunRise because of the number of homeless people has grown in the area.

"We really just felt investing $33 million into that area into a hotel could be a disaster for our company," Robinson said.

Quinco owns a number of lots along 101st Street. Much of the land remains parking, and the buildings with tenants give Robinson weekly calls about graffiti, smashed windows or fires, he said.

Robinson said one of those tenants is a daycare with only 16 children, despite being licensed for triple that amount.”

Not like Robinson (who is the head honcho at the Brick as well, so he has lots of money) has really done anything to spruce up his buildings along 101 St. His properties are the biggest eyesore on that street - he should look in the mirror.

So basically he's is waiting for KG to build ID Phase 2 so he can ride of it's cottails.

Must be nice to sit on shit properties for years and cash out when someone else with deeper pockets does all the hardwork for you. This guy is part of the problem

Not gonna lie, I kinda get why these buildings wouldn’t see improvements.

We’ve seen in other cities such as Surrey that areas can improve through private investment but it usually takes the local government show they are serious about tackling the issue of urban blight through aggressive housing initiatives and police enforcement to build that confidence.

Edmonton either doesn’t have the resources or know how to deal with these issues, and as small local owner of property downtown I would “hold” too.

You know who is behind Quinco....Bill Comrie. But this location has always been a bit 'sketch', even before Covid. Certainly not the greatest site imo.

Well at least it’s out there…..and we don’t ever ever have to ask about it again!
It was perhaps a good idea, but I didn't feel it was that serious or ever really got off the ground. I find the statement about it why it is not proceeding bit ridiculous or naive.

Hey, the area has serious issues and been like that for quite a while. Its not like the problems all just happened recently.

It would be the sort of statement I would expect from someone from out of town who had no clue what they were getting into
