Details for: Love in a Dangerous Time | Exhibition Open & Conversation

We look forward to you joining us for an evening of conversation exploring Canada’s LGBT Purge, when the Canadian government investigated, harassed and expelled thousands of 2SLGBTQ+ employees, military personnel, and members of the RCMP during the Cold War — ruining careers and lives. The exhibition reveals this largely unknown history and tells the stories of survivors who, in 2018, fought back and won a major class action lawsuit against the government of Canada. Survivors of the Purge will be joined by local personalities and recent service members:
  • Michael Phair | Founding Member, Edmonton Queer History Project
  • Michelle Douglas | Executive Director, Purge Fund
  • John McDougal | Chair, Edmonton Police Commission
  • Antoine Lavoie | Proprietor, Delavoye Chocolate Maker

6:00 pm: Event begins
Venue: TBD

He'll also be producing a video on Edmonton as part of his CityVisit series. Tickets to the in person event are by donation and can be purchased here.

Calgary has scooped up the volleyball nationals that has been held for a number of years at expo in May. This is a big loss for Edmonton, this brought in thousands and thousands of people and put the expo to good use. I’m sure Calgary was aggressive with inducements. I just saw some numbers on a much, much smaller event choosing between the two cities and the amount of tourism Calgary dollars being offered to get the event there was eye opening.

Calgary is like the hungry hippo, they are truly trying to eat up all the marbles and could care less if it comes at Edmontons expense, in fact that’s probably their favourite win.

They get lots of corporate sponsors something that is lacking here.

We had it every year? Had no idea…..hmmmmm…..they’re like the “fat kid on a smartie” eh? Surprising, they really don’t have any facility that can handle that many matches at the same time. Oh well, I’m sure they’re are other tons of tourneys that we can grab. Leduc is hosting some massive adult softball beer league in August.

This is the first time I've heard of the volleyball nationals.
If you have a kid in club volleyball you would know.. It has been here for at least 5 years,

15,000 athletes along with their families would descend on the city over three successive tournaments for different age groups and genders.

They are using BMO Center for it. All you need is lots of floor space with high ceilings, the courts get set up in there. I just don’t see it as oh well, we had a good thing going but based in my small sample size of a few hundred person event and what tourism Calgary offered to move the event I can only imagine the size of the inducement offered to move something of this size.

I saw people downtown wearing jerseys from different clubs when it was going on and had asked - what's going on? I didn't know we had hosted for 5 years. That's too bad. It was a lot of people.

I saw it mentioned on the AB webpage.....

Haha! They are? Using a convention facility for volleyball? Oh well, I guess they can hang out at the giant fireplace between matches...too funny......they'll soon realize it can't fit nearly enough matches at the same time...it'll be short lived
