When does this happen here?

Meh, that's a YYC thing...let them have it...works for them. But "forcing" out all of the workers from DT buildings and having them eat a free pancake breakfast and pretend to like each other for 1 morning is ok for them. But let us celebrate that 15,000 concert goers on Gallagher Hill every Folkfest or the 500,000 folks taking in Heritage Days at Hawrelak or the folks DT eating at Taste of Edmonton. Let me put this bluntly to all on here, the Stampede is a dog and pony show whereby the O&G companies get fed and drunk on the dollars of the service companies that all fight for their contracts. No different than their White privileged chuck wagoneers chasing down the "Indians." We have to lose the "Eskimos" from our beloved team, but they get to keep the "Stampeders?" How is that fair?!

The Fringe would likely be the easiest local festival to grow into something somewhat comparable to the Stampede. It's got the history, is already amongst the largest festivals of its type in the world, and is uniquely Edmonton. It would take more investment (both private and public) than it currently gets, but I could imagine a Fringe on a larger scale stretching from Old Strathcona to DT with additional componants like a music festival, comedy, food and beverage, street parties, and maybe combine it with the forever searching for an identity K-Days.

Point being, their city rallies around Stampede and it becomes an amazing celebration of their city, attracts a ridiculous amount of visitors/hotel nights/spend and creates a ton of opportunities for their corporate sector to celebrate, network and connect.

It's insane how many Edmontonians and Edmonton companies/entities go there to take it in, does that have any sort or reciprocal counterpart here?

Edmonton has really lost its corporate mojo and needs to find more ways to bring it back.

Forest from the trees my friend.

It's FAR, FAR more than that. Calgary's Folkfest arguably is much better now and certainly has been outpacing Edmonton's in the last decade. Heritage Days is amazing, but not quite on the same spectrum and Taste of Edmonton is pretty low bar.

Well, we never really had corporate mojo probably since the early 1980's. When you don't put much effort into something for decades, eventually you get what put in.

If I didn't know better I would think Edmonton also banned parades. Used to be K Days actually was a city wide event, we certainly don't make the effort anymore.

Yes, the grass always seems greener elsewhere, but if you look more closely you can find brown patches.
