I’m not a cheerleader for server barns, but blanket ''no thanks'' feels like we’re giving up leverage. Edmonton actually has a couple of built-in advantages for this stuff. Cold air most of the year, industrial land with substation access, and a grid that keeps adding wind/solar so if one is coming, the play is to tie it to concrete conditions: closed loop water or air cooling, heat recovery to a neighbour, local fibre ring upgrades, and a training pipeline for ops techs. It is, and there's a good chance the data center boom fizzles out before this one's even finished. I don't see any reason to encourage data center construction locally—it brings a temporary influx of jobs and some tax revenue, but it really doesn't do much for the community long-term. Meta is also (in my opinion) uniquely evil among the major AI players; they're going all-in on AI boyfriends/girlfriends and slop videos and all that.
I was reading about this over coffee this morning and, not gonna lie, checked my 1win casino account right after just out of habit.
This is the plant out by the airport, right?

Jobs aren’t huge, true, but the property tax is steady and the electrical upgrades don’t disappear if a tenant changes; worst case, another operator takes the shell. I don’t care if it’s Meta or WhoeverCo the covenant should be about power, water, noise, and community benefits, not brand vibes. If council hands out incentives with no strings, that’s on us. If they force a good CBA and hard caps, a data centre can be a tolerable anchor in an industrial park.

YEG company so Andrew is polite and represents all of AB, but surely it will be built in YEG.
