And sadly, let's be honest, Edmonton's built heritage IS extraordinarily thin precisely because we, as a city, seem to lack respect for it. Watching the Giro d'Italia made us sigh with frustration and only-half-joke that if Edmonton had any Roman ruins, we'd have razed them down a long time ago and put a strip mall in their place.
I realize the culture here is more builders, not as much preservers which to some degree made sense when this was a very young city, but after a hundred so years this needs to start to shift.

However, the current era fashion is also new, new, new with very little interest or preserving older buildings beyond what was little was done decades ago here.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here, but what exactly is worth preserving about the facade of this theatre? It's largely a blank, featureless wall.

I suppose the sign is cool, and the awning is interesting, so ok, incorporate that into a new building. But aside from that...

Man that place was the bomb when it was New City. SUCH a great atmosphere. It's so sad it never survived.

Wasn’t New City a different building where State and Main was? Because I’ve been to new city, but I don’t think I’ve ever been to the paramount, unless they were in fact the same place lol. I remember dodging cigarettes on the dance floor there lol

Thought so. Didn’t realize there is a Vons there now.
