It's fundamentally too wide and while improvements can be made, it's far from an ideal cross-section for a really good public realm.

104st, RHW much better, even 124st to be honest.
To me the width just gives us more room to use. We don’t have to choose between bus lanes, wider side walks, and large enough tree boulevards… we can have all of that. It does suck for the street’s frontage being so far apart, but in terms of what can be done with the public realm, there’s so much opportunity

Why can't 102 Avenue be closed to traffic and look like this?

Cars are the only thing stopping us!! /s

I'm not so sure that's true.

I'd say that it is a wee bit more complex than that given 'our habits' and 'preferences', let alone cross sections.

I've been thinking about this more and more, and as I think about it I think we have to really start changing our thoughts about traffic on some of our busy streets.
One road that's been talked about again and again is Whyte Ave. I think despite current and future opposition, Whyte ave from at least 99st. to 109st should be reconfigured to 1 lane bike, 1 lane car and 1 lane tram/LRT. Especially now with speed limits on Whyte a whole lot slower the ave is less and less a fast way to get east/west.

Once the Valley Line West LRT is completed, I would love to see 102 Ave closed to vehicle traffic all the way to 109 St and thereby link up the MUP with the Oliverbahn more closely.
There is a parkade entrance/exit at Canada Place which may pose a problem.
Now that we’re 2 years away from opening…i think it would be a good time to start thinking of this. 4 years of VLSE being open and 102ave isn’t any better with that 1 car lane squished in. LRT collisions, conflicts with cyclists, having 1 car lane here isn’t doing anything to support this area.

102 ave really is the best choice for a car-free spine downtown, and that one car lane just doesn't provide enough benefits to justify it over utilizing it for better car-free uses. Shift the bike lane to the car lane and have the sidewalk take up the bike lane so that festivals and plazas can spill out onto 102 ave.

It connects churchill square, the library, rice howard way, ice district (103rd drive lanes could be reduced), 104th st, alex decoteau and odaymin parks, norquest up to macewan, the oliverbahn. Could even close the intersection at 103rd st, maybe 108th? Lots more potential than keeping one drive lane.

I agree. I just counted and between 97st and 124st, there are 19 intersections that are either stop signs or lights for bikes. Removing the car lane would make the need for this many controlled intersections unnecessary and would make biking/walking down the road so enjoyable.
