West-jet is reconfiguring 43 new aircraft and will now charge extra for reclining seats in economy! Watch Air Canada will do the same soon.

Pay more for reclining seats? WestJet calls it consumer choice. Critics call it a cash grab

WestJet reconfigures fleet of jets with economy seats that can't recline

I get a kick of the linguistic gymnastics in the marketing: "fixed recline".

I swear that if the airlines could convince TC to approve it, base fare would be standing strap hanging.

Wasn't there a SNL skit like this? Plane configured like a NYC subway train.

This is awful. I just came back on a red eye from Santa Maria Cuba and night flying in ulc economy has got to be cruel and unusual punishment. No meals just "snacks" and refreshments and zero room to try to get comfortable and get some sleep

lol I did the Vancouver to Toronto red eye on Flair, which also doesn't have recline, and will never do it again. It was absolutely awful.

That's one of the reasons we don't travel anymore. I don't mind being someplace else - I just don't like getting there. I don't like being treated like cattle. The last time we flew was to St. John's NL, about 3 hours, and that was our limit.

If you don’t like it you are free to pay for the nicer seats.

Airlines do this as most flyers fly on lowest seat cost possible - they are willing to be uncomfortable for a few hours to save money.

If RyanAir could build standing only planes and sell tickets for $20 people would buy them like hotcakes. That’s the simple reality.

I know I don’t mind uncomfortable seats knowing my seat cost $300 less than if it had been more comfortable. It’s all about perspective. And if you still value that comfort, airlines are still happy to sell you that product.

A big point is that many European routes are only 30/45/60 minutes, whereas that sort of route is saved only for our extreme shortest. If we could sell 60-minute long sun destination flights standing folks would buy them up in a heartbeat.

For a few years when my patella was acting up I'd have paid extra to be able to stand for the trip.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’d pay MORE if it means the person in front of me also can’t recline 🙃

You can negotiate that shortly after boarding: cash payment half upfront and half on arrival.
