It takes a certain level of audacity to use marketing of a canoe on a lake in the wilderness when the condo's are in a grocery store parking lot. 1.6km straight line to the closest point on the weaselhead

Great density boost. Forgettable design.

I heard an architect on a podcast describe why every single one of these buildings look like this. Their reasoning was AutoCAD, architect liability, and developers wanting to save anywhere they can.

When talking about AutoCAD they mentioned how easy it is to essentially drag and drop designs, that saves a lot of money on labour. Expanding on architect liability they mentioned firms not wanting to get sued because their designed failed and caused the developer issues. Obviously, developers are the biggest catalyst in this as they want to spend as little money as possible to get the best product.

I see the issue as we are still pretty desperate for housing and there's no real architecture competition when people pick a place to live. Most simply do not factor in how beautiful the building is. So, this is what we get.

These buildings have become ubiquitous. Not just in Western NA, but even in eastern NA. There are boatloads of these in suburban Toronto, and lots of these in Florida or cities like Dallas and Atlanta. I'm not surprised either, it's the most cost effective way to build a 200-300 unit multifamily building. It's unfortunate, and not sure what will change the trend, but nobody wants to push design minimums too much at a time when everyone wants cheaper housing.

Funny thing is this photo is probably a year old 😂 The mall is actually having a partial opening on may 28th!

Thanks for reminding me about the depressing state of our malls.
I see the potential of the TOD they're talking about around Anderson and Chinook. The 61st Ave places they're building now will be like those older buildings in the bottom of the shot, while the portion under construction, will be what we get directly adjacent to Chinook. In my dreams...
