Why is Vaughan so opposed to a provincially funded extension of their existing dedicated bus lanes? It’s only 5km more to extend to their border with Brampton. Then they’d pull in another 10-15km worth of riders in Brampton.

How can they not see that as a huge win economically?
Somehow I wonder if super Italian Vaughan simply doesn’t want Brampton riders in their area.

They're going to get even more Brampton drivers clogging their streets with no rapid alternatives. They're asking for the worst case consequences in Vaughan to amplify. We need to keep as many Transit riders as possible continuously riding on transit and not all switching over to vehicles.

Zum with hour long delays in traffic holding off this plan will cripple highway 7 to a halt for all.

Most of the Brampton riders are getting off at Vaughan Metropolitan Center, away from Vaughan drivers to their advantage under this logic.

Those underused VIVA BRT lanes would be put to proper use for a change and subsidized by more user fares than taxes.

The BRT would run through a constrained section of Highway 7 which currently operates at 4 lanes compared to 6 lanes across the rest of the road in Vaughan.

It is extremely congested today as a result - one of, if not the most congested stretch of road in the City of Vaughan.

One of Del Duca's key election promises was to "fix" this by widening it to 6 lanes (Del Duca ran on a platform of major road expansion - Vaughan experiences some of the worst arterial road congestion in the GTA).

This conflicts with Metrolinx's BRT plans, as there is not enough space to do 6 lanes plus BRT.

We all know that Ford doesn't need to be told twice about transit "taking away" car lanes.

So it dies.


That said - I don't see why the Brampton portion can't proceed. At least the Downtown Brampton to Bramalea section would be helpful as it is relatively congested today and could use dedicated facilities. Between Bramalea and Vaughan, traffic generally moves better (or at least it used years ago when I frequented the area).

The Brampton Budget has already passed for 2025 so I'm not sure how they can keep this going themselves, they honestly shouldn't have to.

Prabmeet Sarkaria needs to give us answers. This BRT goes through his riding. How long is this suspension? Indefinitely?
planning shouldn't be an excessive amount of money they're saving with a suspension.
 
Sounds like it's going to be suspended indefinitely until they need to be voted back in again.

I reached out to Brampton connections to obtain some clarity on what's happening with the Queen BRT project, this is what's happening from Brampton Transit in the screenshot attached, Brampton side is moving forward business as usual with provincial support and we are reading too much into Vaughan's drama impacting our city.

I was told by the same source that the BRT drama in Vaughan is due to their city refusing to pay for a bridge. I don't know the details of the bridge, but I'm guessing the rail bridge near Islington? Others please chime in if any better idea.

As per the message below Metrolinx is giving Brampton a project status update this April we should monitor.

Glad to know ML is still on board with the project.

Edit re: Bridge - I had to look over what bridge they're referring to, but I also believe it's the same bridge that is around Hwy 7 / Islington. It sounds to me like they're going to want to expand the roadway for those BRT lanes, but will have to work with CPKC who own that section. Chances are that if they do plan to work with CPKC, they're going to expect similar work akin to what the HMLRT did for the tunnel under the QEW (Pushbox requiring significant manpower, 55 hours of work as opposed to multiple weeks / months, etc).

Noted on the "Global Transit & Infrastructure Centre" Discord server, GTHA thread. Good on a reporter for asking about this project and not one of the usual questions about Crosstown/Finch delays, etc.

Not sure why everyone is solely blaming this one on Vaughan- it's worth noting that Highway 7 is a regional road, and is York Region's responsibility.

This would be unnecessary, there is sufficient surrounding space to construct a new bridge immediately next to the existing one while it is live. And if Metrolinx is serious about a Bolton Line, consider pitching in to twin the new bridge once they demolish the original.

From my understanding of internal York Region politics, cities do have a significant amount of sway over what happens to their section of road. Unless 6 lane Highway 7 was part of some larger master plan that York Region is dead set on accomplishing, I think its reasonable enough to put the blame directly on Vaughan.
