Many BlackBerry phones to stop working

Jan 3, 2022

Many of BlackBerry Ltd.'s mobile phones will stop reliably working on Tuesday after the company decommissions several of its services.

The Waterloo, Ont.-based business is decommissioning services for BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, BlackBerry 10 software, BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier versions, as it transitions away from producing phones and toward being a software company.

The decommissioning will not impact BlackBerry phones running on Android software, but means devices running the company's legacy services and software through either carrier or Wi-Fi connections will no longer have reliable data, phone call, text message and 9-1-1 functionality.

My Key2 carries on with Android. This phone has been to nearly everywhere on my Tripadvisor map. It was supposed to go to New Zealand in 2021 for my 50th b'day motorcycle tour, but, you know, Covid....

Today I finally retired my BlackBerry Key2, replacing it with a used Pixel 6. I’m finding as my eyesight gets worse I spend most of my time dictating my texts. So the keyboard was becoming less and less necessary.
I don't think I've had a keyboard on my phone for 15 years! iPhone for the win.

So, this made me look.

1) Blackberry doesn't even list a Toronto office; though it does have one......

2) Blackberry has not announced any intention to relocate its head office from Waterloo

3) Blackberry is actually in the black again, showing some good growth prospects into 2026, however, its total earnings don't justify any outlay of this type. There is no budget for this fantasy, even as a leased property.
