His arguments are full of inconsistencies. You will never get tech workers to live there. You don’t need many tech people just a few technicians to replace parts. Edmonton is 4 hours away if you require parts. Don’t you think parts would be stored in Grande Prairie if the largest data centre in the world is just 50km away?

I don't know....still sounds like he's sniffing her panties...

That woman (Premier Smith) is a firecracker,” Kevin laughs. “I was nervous because I’d never worked with her before,” he admits, “But wow! Now that is a leader…. She has to be let loose because she is a friggin’ hero and she is going to bring capital back to Canada.”

This was a pile of nothing before, and it's an astronomically bigger pile of nothing today with the news that a Chinese startup launched a competitive open-source AI using a fraction of the compute. Smith's dream of propping up local gas companies with grossly power intensive AI is extra super duper dead.

Eh, just because the AI meme got curbstomped and all the midwits, charlatans and grifters shilling for it look a little dumb now, doesn't mean that a directly gas powered data center isn't a good idea.

But the idea that such a facility would be the world's largest can be confidently dismissed.

For now :)

If Canada is going to at least try to grow up and act like a real country, there are dozens of projects that would be far more important..

I am not impressed with DeepSeek the Chinese AI app. I spent 3 hours working through its snail speed responses and limited depth of information. In comparison ChatGTP performed brilliantly with instant response times. Nevertheless I will keep the app (its free so far) and watch the progress it makes.

Chinese Hype still manages to take a few prisoners.
The only one taken prisoner by hype is you old man. You're quick to latch onto the dumbest projects and refuse to let go. Between entities like Alldritt and O'Leary, you've got a track record that reeks of desperation to be associated with big projects that exist on paper only to rope in fools.

If one comment about another country entering the AI space is "Chinese hype" I don't know what to tell ya. But what I can tell you is this: O'Leary ain't gonna build diddly squat.

I've heard through the grapevine that there is a significant amount of consultation happening behind the scenes with Alberta Environment regarding water usage, so like any large scale project, plenty of things are taking place that aren't necessarily public. I also got the sense that O'Leary isn't the only party with an interest in the area.

Here’s your Friday briefing.

Meta, Pembina near deal to build massive Alberta AI data centre
The social media giant plans to locate the facility in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland region near Edmonton, using gas supplied by infrastructure company Pembina Pipeline, according to three sources. Companies behind the proposal, as well as the Alberta premier’s office, did not immediately respond to inquiries.

Talking point: If built, Meta’s data centre would be a major catch for the Alberta government, which has tried to position the province as an AI compute hub. Final details of the potential data centre were still being worked out, but two sources said the facility would be powered by Calgary companies Pembina and Kineticor, which earlier this year proposed a 1,800-megawatt natural gas power station in the Industrial Heartland region. One source said Beacon AI, a Calgary-based company with ambitious plans to build several AI data centres, is also involved in the proposed project. - Jesse
