Neither the military nor the media/public would support Bush in ignoring the Constitution in such an outrageous manner. If Bush tried it, he would have a thousand knives in his back from within the Republican Party and even his own administration.
 
One could have said the same thing prior to November 2000, and where were the US military, media and the public then?
 
You definitely have a point, andreapalladio, but I think the biggest insurance that Bush will leave is that ambitious people within the Republican party aspire to his position and wouldn't be too pleased with him hanging around, particularly since the post-September 11 halo around him seems to have dimmed.
 
Ambitious Republicans is not a concept that gives any comfort, I'm afraid.
