I took a look at Street View for this location. It's amazing how many of the old Victorians on Yonge between Dundas and Bloor seem to have vacant upper levels and are only used as storefronts. You don't really notice it unless you look closely at the upper windows. It's almost like you're in downtown Hamilton.

It's sad to see it when there's so much demand both for commercial and residential space in the city. It could be a really nice area with the existing built form, much of which has heritage value. This restoration is a nice step in that direction.

We need more and more of this thinking along Yonge to clean up that stretch without losing much of its spirit.
Especially now, that some of the bigger towers between College and Wellesley are finished and you no longer have larges swaths of construction scaffolding. Similar to this reno I passed by the other day at 556 Yonge. Great job!

Thanks! I still don’t think that economic use change should need to get approval outside of obvious serious externalities.

577 YONGE ST

To permit a nightclub use within the basement level, an eating establishment use on the ground level, a retail store on the second level, and XXX use on the third and fourth levels of the existing four-storey non-residential building.
XXX use? A sex club or studio to shoot porn movies?

Reassuring to see Yonge retain a modicum of its old sleaze.

But of course the restaurant has to be pho *rolls eyes*

Indeed. In keeping with its previous reincarnation as the biggest adult store in Canada (or so it claimed). As for the restaurant, who knows? Maybe it will be one of those 'erotic sushi' joints you find in Japan where the sushi is served on a naked body. They can call it Nubu ;)
