Granted I don't live there, but I've never found HK to be particularly, inescapably, expensive in the way that a place like London (or the UK in general) is. I've also never found it to be 'crowded' in the negative way some some are implying. I'm not sure either of us will convince the other though, so I'm happy to just leave this at 'different strokes'.
Average price of a home in the UK is 630,000 British Pounds; Average price of a home in HK is 930,000 British Pounds.
That's a fairly objective differential.
Average home size in HK is 484ft2
Average home size in the UK is 828ft2
Difference in average price per ft2
HK 1,921 British pounds per ft2
UK 760 British Pounds per ft2
HK is therefore 2.53x more expensive per ft2 to live.
*****
Lets translate all of the above to CAD for easier reference
HK $3,028 per ft2
UK $1,198 per ft2
Toronto $1,400 per ft2 (new build)
****
Note that I used all of UK as a compartor above, I will add London here for a better comparison to Toronto
London Region is 692,000 British Pounds for a new build (average)
Average home size London, UK 705ft2 (using the above stats)
$1,550CAD per ft2 (actually average sale price in May '22 ~$2,000 per ft2 CAD)
The differential has to do w/smaller and more luxury units for sale than what the average ft2 indicates.
*****
Overall (on real estate) Toronto is expensive, and moreso than non-London UK
London is more expensive than Toronto on new build real state by about 45%
HK is 50% more than London, UK
*****
It needs to be said, that prices of goods and services vary widely; and incomes in both London and HK are considerably higher than Toronto, so direct comparisons are always a bit misleading in terms of as-lived lifestyle.
On real estate, I can't find an average feet squared across all home types for Toronto, I'm sure one of you can; but for Canada its 1,050ft2
