The Toronto knockout game for Thursday is set.

Portugal vs. Croatia.

With Toronto’s massive Portuguese community and the game likely being Ronaldo’s last in an intentional tournament, I expect ticket prices will be astronomical.
There were surprisingly far fewer fans wearing Portugal jerseys showing up for the Fan Festival today. Total sea of yellow with an abundance of Colombian fans. Apparently many city dwelling Portugal fans were staying in their neighbourhood to watch but don't know how much truth there is.

Just in case you had to wash your hair today...

Canada 1, South Africa 0

Incredible. The city is electric! We may yet come to regret not building permanent expanded seating at BMO Field. Kids of this generation are going to get into soccer after watching that game.

With Canada making it this far, and more so if we make it to the final 8, I think an argument can be made for Canada to host in 2038, the next time CONCACAF must host. They can do a multi country host again but both Mexico and the US have hosted and Canada has not.

The Ontario Line to Exhibition will be up and running and maybe with a 20 year notice, we can build a proper World Cup class stadium in Toronto capable of hosting key matches and Edmonton and Montreal can host next time. Perhaps it can serve as a catalyst to complete Alto.

I went to fan festival today to watch the game, somewhat nervous about the crowding/capacity issue last night repeating but all was smooth. By the final whistle attendance had hit around 11000. No additional tickets were released than what were made available on Thursday. Great atmosphere, everyone left happy. Didn’t linger but many more people staying at the main stage to dance and celebrate. Much of me wishes we had more displays of passion for our sports teams but something to appreciate how orderly everyone was right after an exciting and historic win.

Half expecting operations to not release more tickets in the mornings now and through the day as a higher percentage of ticket holders attend. For the first two weeks attendance was very mixed, with about 50% not showing at all. Must be extremely difficult to predict attendance and make that call to release more while counting on people to leave after a game.

I’m expecting Thursday for Portugal vs Croatia will be bananas in parts of the city.

People here were saying tourists would not be staying in hotels outside Toronto. That may be true, but on Lakeshore West I saw plenty of GO riding locals going to the Germany Cote d'Ivoire game or fanfest.

I'd never seen the Oakville GO parking lot that full.

Here's a funny GIF from the South Africa vs. Canada match in which a lady drops her phone while performing the wave:
