Not just Toronto struggling to sell tickets, the US as well. Airfare prices are inane thanks to Trump's war with Iran, plus tourists are dealing with the ICE thugs in the US. No wonder people don't want to travel.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is one of the biggest bombs in World Cup history. We tax payers will be stuck with the bill. Hopefully we never see the World Cup in Canada ever again!

Hundreds of World Cup tickets are still unsold, but one expert says prices could fall 'dramatically'

Who could have possibly seen this coming?

I mean, this isn't inherently a Canadian issue, as much as we are taggers-on for this bid. We'll never be able to host on our own and the only way we can host is to join others in our confederation. It's nice we'll be getting matches but the impending "failure" of this event is not inherently our fault. It's almost certainly the US' and FIFA's condoning of their actions which haven't occurred at any other WC.

The city has updated what dates matches will be shown at Nathan Phillips Square. Massive increase from 21 days/games to 67 games across 25 days.

I didn't think we'd see another host have the bad press in the run up to a World Cup like Qatar did in '22, but the U.S. seems to have them beat. Didn't expect the vibes to be good, but damn...
Remember that a lot of the "bad press" that Qatar was getting was from Western Liberal nations being performative. Norway said they would boycott (they didn't qualify) and Germany wore rainbow patches. Both were vocal about issues in Qatar (some warranted to varying degree) but neither have said anything about the current issues in the US, including the continued breaking down in credibility of the main hosts. Qatar is essentially a propped-up American state in the GCC and even they weren't immune to criticism from the West, but it seems like that criticism can never be pointed towards one of their own when the rubber hits the road...

Canada matches, June 12, 18, and 24, to be shown on big screen at U of T Front Campus of St. George campus.
And most days on the screen in Celebration Square Mississauga.

No sympathy, hotels got greedy. The World Cup just isn't that big of a deal in Canada, compared to other parts of the world.

basically same occupancy because all the corporate events moved to july and may.
Uhh I saw that same piece, from 3 weeks ago. You yourself also said the hotels aren't even 50% sold right now.

"City's hotels tracking to see occupancy rate around 80% in June, July" as of mid-May is not conflicting with occupancy rate being only ~50% come June. That CBC article citing "tourism groups" staying "hopeful" is just that, hope. They hoped <50% occupancy would surge by mid June.

But Ravi Kahlon took a positive view of analytics provided by U.S. hotel data firm CoStar, showing that as of June 1, occupancy for Vancouver’s first match day on Saturday between Australia and Turkey was 57.4 per cent, down from 71.6 per cent on the same date a year ago.

I’m wondering whether an unintended consequence of hosting the World Cup is that it may discourage day‑trippers and non‑FIFA visitors from visiting, due to concerns about traffic and large crowds.
See:
I think it's displacing tourists who would usually visit in June/July and moving their trips to May/August, at least anecdotally from what I'm hearing and seeing. I know many who went out to BC early this year to avoid the World Cup mess in town.

Not a great first day for events but at least it wasn’t the home opener. Lightning at the waterfront shut down activations at Harbourfront Centre and personnel were told to shelter. Fan Fest was shut down and evacuated, won’t reopen tonight.

Bizarre. Lightening was well clear by 4:45 pm. And heading north east.

Is everyone with any competence at city on vacation this month?

And does lightening there make it to the ground? All hits the CN Tower in my experience watching.

Rules around lightning are strict, you can’t just decide somewhere outdoors is safe because lightning has never struck there. Remaining closed for tonights game is a bit bizarre though.
