Martin Regg Cohn in the Star has also written a couple of anti Nate articles.

I really like him as my MP: he is thoughtful, and accessible.

I concur. I like Nate alot. But.... not everyone does.

However, I suspect that he comes across as not a team player; he very much seems to believe in holding to one's own conviction (e.g. he was critical of aspects of the recent Federal budget)

This, for sure.

I'm not very familiar with NES. Can someone give me a quick explanation of why there are so many ruffled feathers around this guy? He has friction with the federal leadership, OLP is seemingly going out of their way to shut him down as well. Why?
He's known as a bit of a maverick. The things that endear him to his constituents and supporters tend to rub party establishment the wrong way. The way he went after Crombie during the last leadership race and during her recent review left a bad taste in people's mouths, for example.

We'll see how the leadership race goes, but in my opinion among the presumed candidates he's the one most likely to shake things up in a provincial campaign and significantly increase the OLP's vote share. The OLP establishment though seems destined to coronate Bains, a Rogers corporate exec, as leader.

Crombie (and those that promoted her) so richly deserved to be gone after. She was the John Tory-est leader they could have chosen... Milquetoast. They then seemed surprised that Ford called the election. It was embarrassing.

Anyway, NES would (I think) be good for the province, but I don't think he'll be leader.

He and the current PM are not chummy..... at all.

Nate already ready qualifies for an MP pension (at age 65), he's only 41; I don't know how long he wants to stick out being a back bencher.
He's a good bridge burner. Not sure it was smart to burn that bridge with the very popular Liberal PM.

That's something that can be fixed. Support the PM's mission. Don't be a dick.

Carney is twenty years older than Nate, and likely won't be PM into the mid 2030s. Back benchers, especially those from the governing party can do good work for their constituents. OTOH, there is no benefit or glamor in becoming the leader of the OLP, which will continue to flounder into the next provincial election.

If I was Nate I would concede, remain a MP, dedicate yourself to the PM's mission and watch while the next OLP leader gets absolutely smoked in the next ON election. And then, consider running for OLP leader to replace that loser.
The OLP, with the right leader, is well positioned to win the next provincial election. Ford's favourables are in the tank.

His decision to stick around as Federal MP until the end of this parliamentary period and not resign while they were part of a minority might've bought him some goodwill, which might explain the Carney endorsement.

He indicated yesterday in a CTV interview that he might not pursue the leadership after all. His experience in the recent nomination process seemed to sour things for him.

NES reminds me a bit of Josh Matlow too. A very committed Liberal, principled and smart, but unwilling to cozy up to the party establishment, which is to the right of people like these (or Gerard Kennedy for that matter).

John McGrath in TVO has a pretty damning read on things. (No paywall.)

“…When prominent Liberals tell members of the press that they worked in the Scarborough Southwest nomination race to defeat Erskine-Smith and “save the party” as Tom Allison reportedly did recently, that says a lot more about them than it does about Erskine-Smith.”

Allison was a close confidant and campaign co-chair for Bonnie Crombie.

OLP doomed to lose another election. NDP need to really step it up and be more visible.

Indeed; they're trying to repeat exactly what did not work last time. Nate come out of this looking pretty good; he's challenging the results and saying he won't run if the result is overturned. Of course this is likely pissing off the OLP machine...
